Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Would you go to the pedi?

We were traveling last week, which included four hour airplane rides to and from another state, as well as a stay in a hotel and some late nights.

On Monday, DS woke up with a runny/stuffy nose.  His attitude and appetite were normal.  Tuesday the same.  Wednesday a little less runny but more cranky (he hasn't been napping well because of the stuffiness).  This morning he slept until 8:15 (7 or 7:20 is normal), has had the runniest, stuffiest nose yet (all clear or mucousy white, not green), and was in an awful, awful mood all day.  Also wouldn't eat and would only sleep on me.  No other symptoms (cough, ear rubbing, junky sound in his chest, etc) and no temp all week.

Would you make a pedi appt?

Thanks!

Re: Would you go to the pedi?

  • I would just give him another day to get back into his routine and see what happens. It sounds more like a cold, which they won't do anything for you even if you go.

  • I'd probably call to talk to the nurses.

  • Probably not. I wouldn't be surprised if LO has a cold besides being out of sorts. But unless LO isn't eating, not making enough diapers, or has a temp, there is nothing they can do.

  • Could he be teething? On top of being exposed to different germs, sometimes LOs get stuffy when they are cutting a tooth. Hope things get better! I'd probably wait another day or two before taking him.

  • Nah, if there is no fever or labored breathing, there really isn't anything they can do.  Saline drops, elevate crib, vapor baths, and suction is about all you can do. Also put a humidifer in his room to help.

    Good luck!

  • I wouldn't. I'd just be sure to use a humidifier at night, saline drops and the bulb syringe.

  • Thank you all for your feedback. I was thinking along the same lines as most of you, and I appreciate knowing that you'd react the same.

  • I personally wouldn't go.  It's probably just a cold or maybe teething.  It doesn't sound like anything major.  If he's not eating well, try pedialyte to make sure he's getting hydration at least.

I agree with this, LOs get stuffy especially when cutting top teeth...which I've recently found out.

This. I'd also use the Vick's plug in. They clear my LO's sinuses right away!

  • They can't do anything for a cold. Viruses have no real treatment plan. Nurse in a steamy bathroom (or bottle feed), use saline drops and some kind of nose sucker.

This, but if it would make you feel better, call and go.  I firmly believe in Mom's intuition (see earlier post about scary day update :-)
