5 week u/s and no visible embryo

Went in today for a vaginal u/s due to bleeding. I'm exactly 5 weeks, so even though in the back of my mind I tried not to work myself up to see anything, I was still really disappointed and scared when my dr. couldn't locate the yolk sak. Is this normal?  

He gave an HCG pregnancy test that detects if your levels are above 10,000. He told me to wait a week and take it and hopefully it shows that my pregnancy is still progressing. Either way, I think I'll schedule another u/s at 6 weeks. Surely I should be able to see something then, right? 

 Would really appreciate some T&P...grow baby grow!!

    That is pretty early to see much of anything so I def wouldn't get discouraged. I had an u/s at 5 wks 4days and all they saw was the yolk sac. At that point days make huge differences! I hope your next u/s is wonderful!!

    That's pretty typical for 5 weeks. I had an u/s at like 5 weeks and three days and didn't see a yolk sac either! I went back at 6weeks 3 days and saw a little flicker of a heart beat!

    Oh sweetie, for my 2nd pregnancy, I went in at 5w1d and there was nothing.  My OB said that's exactly what you should see that early.  People do see something at 6w, but it's not much then either!  Ts&Ps to you and your LO!

    Thanks for all the support. I wanted to hear the doctor say "this is normal" but he never did. Thank god for you ladies -  I'm getting the reassurance from you instead!! :)

    5 weeks?!? I'd be calling every news station if you actually saw an embryo at 5w.

    At my u/s at 5w5d, all we saw was a gest sac and a yolk sac. It was too early for an embryo. That embryo is now in my siggy.

    Your best bet would be to go for an ultrasound at 7w. Then, you will be sure that you'll see an embryo and a heartbeat.

    It could easily be too early.  I went in for a u/s just after 5 weeks and was only able to see a gestational sac.  A week and a half later, we were able to see the yolk sac, fetal pole and heartbeat.  At this stage a matter of hours can make a huge difference.

    Sending lots of T&Ps that  next week's u/s goes perfectly.

    I had an u/s at 5 weeks and just saw a gestational sac.  One week later, it took some searching, but we were able to locate the hb.  Good luck!  I hope it's just too early.  Has the bleeding stopped?

    Unfortunately no. Still pink/red blood mixed in with the yeast infection medicine :( I think that is the scary part. No yolk sak + bleeding...I haven't heard too many happy endings with those variables. Sigh.

    I went to ER for spotting (brown and red) at 5w4d.  The ER doctor told me I was having a blighted ovum.  They saw a sac but nothing was in it.  My ob saw the ultrasound, and she said wait for a week to repeat it.  A week later, there was a heartbeat!

    I know it's very scary.  I've been there twice.  Hang in there!

    I think it is just a bit early. I had my first u/s at 5wks and all they saw was the gestational sac. The next week there was a yolk sac and a flicker.
