Too Much Poop! Advice Please :)

Lately, DS has been having what I call poo-splosions very often. His clothes are getting stained and the laundry gets cleaned faster than I can put it away. we've tried going up a diaper size, we've tried switching brands, we've tried folding various parts of the diaper in, and we change him at the first fart or whiff of poo. But he still manages to soil himself almost once a day. Any ideas on what we're doing wrong? Or is this normal? Also, any advice on getting out poop stains would be much appreciated. We use Zout, and it seems to be pretty hit or miss as to whether or not it works. Oh, and we use disposable diapers. TIA!

  • I dunno about normal, but we've been using Clorox2 for colors. It's gotten the poo stains out for me. I let it sit on the fabric for a bit. When I wash it, I use it with the full load of laundry.

  • The sun takes out poo stains like magic. Hang stuff to dry outside, it will come out no matter how it looked when it came out of the washer.

As for diapers, I've heard a lot of people say cloth was easier. I bet you're washing as much poop as you can already anyway. We've had very few leakages with cloth, and no explosions.

Sun, like just long enough for it to dry will get it out?? Who knew!

Yup. It supposedly works even through a window in winter, but I haven't tried it yet. Also supposedly works through cloud.

I agree totally! No explosions in cloth, only in disposables.

    And sun is like magic!

  • I like magic, and I could use a little sun. Maybe I'll go stand out with the clothes Wink

The only leaks I've had have been pee when I didn't want to wake him to change him over night.  No poop explosions or anything.

And the sun will take everything out- I had some diapers out yesterday and it was cloudy and it didn't work as well/quickly, but it did work eventually.

  • I agree with everyone else, sun for stains and cloth is amazing!  Will is a super heavy wetter and he has never leaked (or poop-sploded) out of cloth.  But if cloth isn't something you want to do, maybe change the brand of diapers you're using.  When Will was born he was too small for all of his newborn cloth so we were stuck with disposables.  The hospital used Pampers and Will leaked out of every.single.one.  Every diaper change meant an outfit change, so we switched to Huggies and it was MUCH better.  So you might try a different brand and see if they fit your LO better!

  • We've had a few poop-splosions.  I think with enough volume, any diaper will leak but I make sure they're on real tight.

I keep a bottle of spot cleaner next to the laundry basket and spray stains before I put them in.  I use Borax in the wash and it seems to get out all the stains.  I've forgotten a few times and the stains don't come out nearly as well without it.  We don't get enough sun in Portland to rely on it for laundry help!  lol

  • Thanks for all of the responses.  I don't know much about cloth diapering, so I think it's fascinating (and awesome!) that you have almost no leaks of either kind.  I prefer the disposables (he poos several times a day, and it's just easier to throw the diapers out), but I will definitely keep your advice about CD in my mind if we can't figure something out and the poo-splosions get worse.

I never knew that about the sun!  I am definitely going to give that a try.  And if it won't work, we'll invest in some Borax or Clorox2!
