Budgeting question

If you itemize toiletries, cleaning supplies, paper products, etc. separately in your budget, how do you track it?  Do you go through your receipts after shopping and break it down?  Do you purchase them separately for ease of tracking?

  • I wish I was organized enough to even track everything! :)

I split out my receipts in Quicken.  I don?t often buy toiletries and household stuff at the grocery store or Costco so it?s my Target receipts that get me.  The only time I figure tax out (or do separate transactions) is for major home improvement projects like remodels. I don?t want the weedkiller I also bought at Lowe?s going to the Office remodel. Otherwise I just round.

I?m also a dork in that I split out clothing and salon stuff for the 3 of us.  General toiletries I don?t, but haircuts I do. I should stop that, it?s not like either DH or DS do anything besides haircuts.

  • Before Kids - yes I do, after - not so much.

I have two accounts - one for Household and one for personal use.  Toiletires are for me (usually make Rod buy his) and Household means "shared" so anything to keepp the house together.

But of course this isonly my spending - I don't track Rod and he doesn't spend out of the household account - so my guess is , that whatever he spends isn't tracked.  And that could be anything from Home Depot
