Sleeping in a puddle of milk?

we side nurse at night (sooooo helpful for sleep!), but every time LO and I end up snuggled up in a pool of milk (as she gets sleepy she lets it run out of the side of her mouth).

We use nipple shields (she won't latch without one)- is this something I can't avoid as long as we have the shields, or is there some way to avoid this?

We had the same problem when we were using the shield. I used to put a cloth diaper/burp cloth under DS's head and my breast to absorb the overflow. The cloth gets damp, but there's no "puddle" and it doesn't get to the sheets.

I have the same problem. I think that as long as I am using the shields then we will continue to sleep in a pool of milk. I cannot get her to latch without one most days. I have just started keeping a burp cloth beside me and put it under her when we nurse. It does help a little. Sorry I don't have any better advise.

thanks anyway-- we put towels and blankets to try to absorb it, but of course she falls asleep nursing, and as soon as I try to move her off of the "puddle"... she wakes up, so half the time I end up sleeping in the puddle too.

Hopefully we will get off the shields eventually!

I got one of the little waterproof crib pads and put that down as a base, then I kept a stack of dry burp cloths next to my bed to change them out as one got wet.
