15 month check :( Boo!

Took J in for his 15 month check today. Growth and all is good in that area, but we left with referrals for speech pathologist (which I anticipated) and one for the cardiologist because she is hearing a murmur. Anything heart related scares the life out of me, because I had a brother who passed away from complications related to heart surgery as a baby. It's so hard not over think things sometimes it very well could be nothing but of course my brain automatically goes to the worst case scenario.

I totally understand being scared about the cardiologist. But hopefully it turns out to be nothing and just a murmur that is no big deal. My thoughts are with you! Hopefully you can get into the cardiologist soon so you know something sooner rather than later.

You don't have to answer this, but why a referral for a speech pathologist already? He is only 15 months, right? Not judging at all just wondering since I'm a new parent and haven't read that far ahead yet in my books.

Thank you. Her concern is that he has about 5 words (only 2 that he uses regularly). Which is within range for a 15 month old but he's had the same 5 words for months now. It can take 5-6 months to get in with the speech pathologist and her concern is that if we wait until his 18 month appt. to do the referral that would put him at almost 2 before he is seen. Really it's just to be proactive.

I hope everything turns out to be okay! Better to find out now than later!!!

I was also wondering about the speech pathologist, because I have a friend with a DD a little older than yours and her pedi said they will decide when she is 2 if she will need speech therapy.

Ok, good. I feel like sometimes when drs bring up things that they are used to seeing and know don't necessarily indicate major problems, they forget that the general public doesn't know that, so they say something like, "Kiddo might have a heart murmur, so i'm referring you to a cardiologist," when what they mean is, "It could be nothing, and probably is, but i'd like a cardiologist to check it out anyway." I had to see a cardiologist in high school, and i was really worried about it, but came to find out later it was a precaution, not a significant concern.

Gosh I wouldn't worry about that at all for 15 months speech... I bet by the time you get in you won't need it. But like you said, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Ben had maybe 3 words at 15 months. Cooper was about the same, maybe a few more.

I hope the murmur goes away on its own, I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

My husband did too. I hope it is nothing serious, but I would worry like you so I know that it is hard not to! I will keep your little guy in my thoughts!

There's a lot of communication and language development that goes on before the development of actual speech/words. Good for you (and your doctor!!) for being proactive - many do take a wait and see approach when there is a lot that can be done even for really young kids if that's what the family wants to do.

If you don't want to wait that long to get in to see a private speech path, there are services you can get through the state/your county - evaluations are included in the services they provide. Because these services are funded by the state, they have a timeline they are required to follow regarding when they need to respond to families, get kids in, etc., and it's much shorter than this. You also don't need a referral from a pedi to contact them, you can self refer. If you'd like more info on who to contact, let me know.

Lots and lots of good thoughts that the hear murmer is nothing at all to worry about!!

I am a nervous mom too, so I totally get it, but hopefully it is just a growing murmur and is gone soon! And good to be proactive, it never hurts. Pleas keep us posted on your little man!

Thanks ladies I knew this would be the right place to get support. DH iss very much like we'll deal with whatever when it comes and my mom just cried when I told her about the cardiologist, especially since the doc we're being referred to was my brothers doc.

As far as the speech it's one of those areas that is a little gray. I know development happens so different from child to child. L was a talker and was speaking short sentences by his first birthday. I constantly remind myself not to compare him and J. At this point I feel like it won't hurt him to see someone and hopefully by the time we get in he won't need it. One thing that has improved is that he is finally starting to sign with us and had picked up several in the last couple of weeks.

I'm sorry to hear about the heart murmur. Hopefully it all turns out to be absolutely nothing!

As for the speech therapy, I'm surprised it would be recommended at this point. Hayden turns 15 months next week, and I'm not really sure she says any words. I think she might say "hi" and she imitates our sounds all of which I thought was pretty normal at this point. If your first was saying sentences at his first birthday I'd say that is downright amazing, so definitely try not to compare.
