Nursing to sleep at nap and bedtime

Hi there.

I have been nursing my LO to sleep for the past few months (he is almost 4 months now). At night I lie down with him in our bed and nurse to sleep. I recently started doing the same for naps as he responds better to this. The only thing is now he associates nursing with sleeping so the only time he really eats is when he is about to go to sleep. And if he stirs, he is looking for the breast to settle him again. Some days it's great and he will nap an hour or two without stirring, but some naps he rouses every 30 mins so I am lying with him for about 10 mins each time.

Anyone else experience this with their LO? As he gets older and more into a nap routine, with it get better? Or should I try to cut out nursing to sleep for naps now?

  • I nursed LO to sleep for naps and sleep until I quit at 15 months.  I don't think it's a problem, it's just a matter of age for him to mature with the time sleeping/away from the breast.  When he'd wake up I'd just nurse him back to sleep again - especially when he was small like that at 4 months.

I only nurse to sleep for bedtime so that dd knows the difference between bedtime and naps. She usually goes down well for both. It makes things easier if we are out and it helps me get more done while she naps.

This. DD stopped nursing to sleep for nap about 2 weeks ago on her own so all that's left is bedtime - they mature a lot over that first year!
