I want to get something for Owen from the baby, and I have no idea where to start. I kind of want to do toys or something that will keep him entertained while I am feeding or dealing with the baby, but at the same time would like to get something that he can use for a long time or have as a keepsake. DH doesn't want to get anything, says he will never remember, but I like the gesture and think O would be excited to get a present and some attention. Any ideas?
Re: Big brother gift ideas?
We got John a kids digital camera (Discovery Kids I think?) to bring to the hospital when he came to visit so he could take pictures of his new baby brother. Of course there weren't any decent ones on there but he loved taking the pictures and making everyone pose and smile. Later the next week I had a few pictures printed and put them in a small cheap photo album for him to take to school. He thought they were all the pictures he took with his new camera. It's ok to lie to your kids in this situation, right?? I was worried about what he would to while I was busy with the feeding and other things, but really he was content to just be wherever the baby was or if I needed a few minutes to put Ryan to sleep he would either watch TV or play quietly. I was surprised at how easy it was actually.
And to your DH's point, John dug out the camera from his toy box just the other day and was playing with it when he said that this was "the camera he took to the hospital when we got baby ryan" - so he does remember!
Thanks for the suggestions! I need to get shopping here pretty soon, I guess.
dbert, I actually looked at a Mickey Mouse music set with maracas, a tambourine and a recorder and DH vetoed it immediately, lol.
R loves Dora so I printed this certificate ( https://www.nickjr.com/printables/doras-sibling-certificates.jhtml ) and laminated it. That was the keepsake gift. The other gift she got from L was a YGG book. She got both of those in the hospital and loved them. R also gave L a gift as well which she and I wrapped together b.f L was born.
I also bought quite a few other toys for her to play with while I'm feeding L. Those have been given for various reasons.
I am sorry but this is hilarious.
It actually was quite humorous once we realized how dumb we were. I don't know what I was thinking.
This is a little off topic but sort of related...
Not sure if you're planning to breastfeed or not but one of the best pieces of advice I got was to buy some new "special" toys for Scott that he could play with ONLY when I was nursing Nate. We also got a few new Backyardigan (his favorite show!) DVDs that he could only watch when I was nursing Nate. This made me being pulled away for nursing less of an issue for Scott since he got to do something fun during that time.
I am planning on BFing and have been wondering what to do while getting in to the groove. That's what I am most nervous about, while I am feeding DD that O is getting in to things or throwing a fit. I thought about little toys, but a couple Thomas DVD's might be good.
