My midwife mentioned taking a look at induction around 41 weeks because my chances of having a VBAC are greater if I go into labor before 41 weeks. I really REALLY do NOT want to be induced (my induction with #1 lead to my c/s). But, obviously I would rather be induced and have a vaginal birth than not be induced and have another c/s.
Does anyone know how true this it? Have personal experience? Thoughts? Thanks!
Re: VBAC chances better before 41 weeks?
My midwife had to induce me at 41 weeks due to hospital policy of not allowing VBACs go beyond that point. Obviously, I would have preferred not to be induced, but like you- my option was that or a RCS. Luckily, my induction was successful and I was able to VBAC.
My advice is to wait as long as possible. If it gets to the point of induction or RCS, that is when you need to make your choice. The stats suggest VBACs are more successful prior to 41 weeks but I think the data is skewed due to the fact that women who go beyond that are generally coerced into RCSs or aren't allowed the opportunity for induction.
One thing to remember is that no two pregnancies are alike, so if it comes down to an induction, try not to think about the fact that it didn't work last time. It might this time! But hopefully you'll go into natural labor first!
Ditto this. I'm delivering at the same hospital as MAprincess (with the same CNM) so I have to follow the same policy. I was induced with DD and I REALLY want to avoid it, but I will still attempt a 41 week induction before going with an RCS. I trust my midwife will be more patient with my induction than my doctor was as well.
They are right that overdue VBACs are less likely to be successful but they are not shown to have an increase risk in rupture. I hope you go into labor naturally either way!
