Pregnant after a Loss

Baby shower timing? WWYD?

So, I have no idea how early or late to have my shower.  I will go nuts if we wait too long and I don't have our baby things, but I lost my baby at 28 weeks last time and feel torn about having an early shower.  I want to do the gender reveal at the shower (that way I still get gender nutral gifts, but get to find out the gender).

We should know by September the sex of the baby.  I don't want to keep the secret for too long so I was thinking a shower in late October or November (I'm due mid February).  I would be 24 to 28 weeks.  Is that too early?  I don't want one in December because it is hard with the Christmas holiday.  Then I would have to wait until January (I would be 34 weeks the first week of January).  I feel like that is too late.  What would you do?

TIA!

I personally think that is too early unless you are traveling a long distance and your doctor limits travel in 3rd tri.

There was poll/question asked about showers a couple days ago and I would say the majority of people were having their showers between 30-34 weeks.

See, that is the problem!  I will be 30-34 weeks in December.  I think planning a shower then will make it so many people could not attend because of family Christmas get-togethers.

  • Mine is early (27 weeks) because we're having twins and I've heard that much later isn't practical. It's also when my ILs could make it out. I think it's kind of early for a singleton, but whatever works for you. Right around the holidays will be tough for people... what about the beginning of December?

  • I'm having my family shower right around 30 weeks for the same reasons you want to have it early. It will be held the Saturday after Thanksgiving in Miami since everyone will be in town. I'm also having 2 other ones (a work one and an Orlando friends one) one will be earlier like around 28 weeks and the other will be in December some time.

The first weekend in December might work, but I am still not wanting to have it in December.  I don't want to sound selfish, but I know that once Decmber hits my budget is super tight and I don't have money for shower gifts because all my money is going to Christmas and birthday gifts (we have 7 family birthdays in December).  I don't want people feeling like they have to break the bank for my shower.

If you send out invites either the last week of October or the first week of November for a first week of December shower, I think that gives ample time for people to plan and budget.

True.  I didn't even think about that.  Thanks for your help.

While I agree with Rachael normally, for you the Christmas thing is a valid concern, not only will people not be able to come because they're busy, they won't want to come to another gift-giving event when they're already buying Christmas stuff.  Not that you are trying to schedule for optimum gift-getting, but it would be easier on your guests not to have it right in the middle of the busy holiday season.

If you don't have to travel, I'd push it to January. Our wedding was on Jan. 8th and I thought it might be too much being 2 weeks after Christmas and 1 week after New Year's but it was actually a great time of year, people were still in the party spirit after the holidays, it was like one last hurrah, we had a huge turnout, almost everyone we invited came and had a great time.

  • I think pp gave you good advice. The first week in December should be fine. Plus, you could then do a sort of holiday theme which could be cute.

  • I had my first one at 30 weeks and I have my other this weekend at 33 weeks...I think that most singleton showers are after 30 weeks but ultimately it is your call and you can do whatever you think is best for you...

  • I will be having my first shower at 25 weeks, but that is only because my mom wants to have the shower on Columbus Day weekend so her best friend can be there.  I am not comfortable doing it that early, but it's important to her.  My preference would be to wait until 30 - 34 weeks.

  • Thanks for your advice and thoughts everyone!  It has been very helpful.  I am now thinking the weekend after Thanksgiving.  Most of my family will be in town that week and I will be 28 weeks.  A little early, but not too early and not in December.  I will be talking with family about it to see if that works for them.  Thanks again!

  • I would say that as long as you dont have to do alot of traveling for your shower that having it the first or second weekend in January should be fine. I had the same problem trying to figure out when to have my shower with graduation parties and already planned trips/events/outings the only day that really worked for us that wasnt too late or early is July 31st and Ill be 35wks then. At first I was a little anxious about having it so late and close to my due date but we have gotten most of the "essentials" ourselves should baby come and we dont have everything we wanted.
