Daycare

Is anyone else starting to research daycare and freaking out about where to find that extra $500-$700 per month??

We found out we were pregnant just after my husband quit his job to go back to school and now I'm totally stressed about how to make it all work.

Re: Daycare

  • I quit my job because we can't afford to have two in daycare.  It would be almost $2000 a month.  I didn't even bring that much home.

I WFH but I know that's pretty common in my area too... hence I did the clicky poll about the Baby Fund :)

Holy crap! We'll be paying a $1,000 dollars a month for daycare with 2! I thought that was bad!

  • Ours will probably be over a $1000 a month.  I introduced that number to DH three years ago when we started trying.  We were talking about me staying home within the next three years or so and I pointed out that it's not that big a leap from paying for daycare to me staying home because my take home pay isn't much more than daycare and I don't take my employers benefits.

    Good luck!

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I only wish it was $500-$700 per month here. Lowest is about $1150! I'm saving like a mad woman.

We'd also pay near $2000 for 2 and that tipped the scales for DH when I was ready to quit a job i hated 6 months ago. I'd only be working for retirement savings and health insurance. I plan to return to teaching once the kids are in elementary school.

I would love to pay this much!  Ours will be $1100/month (for one child).  I make enough that it is still "worth it" for me to work...but when #2 comes around, we will have to re-evaluate!

I wish that I paid that. We pay about $1000 a month.

  • $500-700 would be dirt cheap in my area! We are touring a few places next week but I expect to be paying about $1000 per month. I knew these costs before getting pregnant so we've had time to adjust to the idea :-)

  • Wow.. what are are you in that daycare is $500-$700 a month.. that is a great deal.  I called a few places and they were charging 1300-1600/month for 1 child.  We are currently saving but my bring home pay is just about what daycare would be...we will see what happens.

I'm in TX and 500-700 a month is pretty common for home day cares which is usually what people in this area use. For an actual day care system it's closer to the 1000-1300 range. Not sure if it's the same for OP

  • Daycare around me is $1900/month...FOR ONE BABY!

We're saving away and we both got decent raises recently, so hopefully we will find a way.  Also, we get a decent tax refund every year, so that will definitely help out come March/April when we'll start daycare.

Although we would have loved to have twins, I was pretty nervous before I knew it was just one baby at the thought of having to figure out daycare for two babies.  I don't know what we would have done, but somehow parents always figure it out.

  • Yes daycare is super expensive. We are hoping to only send LO 2 days a week, but it's still about 400 bucks for a home daycare. Daycare centers around here are 100-115 a day! Who can afford that?

  • We knew how much we were looking at for daycare before we started TTC, and we knew I would be getting a raise this year, which would help offset some of the cost.  We've also been aggressively paying down debt (car is done; one student loan is almost gone; we just have our mortgage and one other student loan) and saving up money.  By the time LO is here we should have at least 1/3 of my yearly salary in a savings account and whatever we don't use while I'm on leave will go toward daycare or starting a college fund.

Average cost here is $800-$900/month for infant care.  We'll definitely have to make some adjustments to our budget, and we'll really have to re-evaluate things when we decide we're ready for #2, but with just 1 kiddo in daycare we'll be okay.

  • I only wish I could find daycare for that cheap.  We researched seven or eight infant daycares around our home and work and all of them were about 950 a month or higher.  We actually couldn't find any infant daycares that were cheaper than that.  On top of that, my work insurance for the baby is going to cost 600 a month.  We can't get child only insurance for our baby because no one does that anymore so work is our only choice.  We're just going to make it work because that's the only thing we can do.  However, my co worker found an at home daycare for 400 a month.  I totally was not comfortable with giving my baby to a stranger all day who is not checked up on or audited but if you can find good references for someone, that might be a good option for you.
  • You think that is bad? I just found out that a nanny for our 1 baby will cost ?2587 per month up front of which we will get ?4500 back but which still amounts to ?2212 (think $3145) per month.  Daycare costs considerably less at ?700 per month, but don't stay open late enough, they all close between 5:30 and 6:30 for me and DH who work until 7.  Thankfully I am not too attached to my job!

  • It is much cheaper to have a nanny! I have been a nanny before and you get paid less, but if they add in perks like getting to do your laundry and things like that it makes it worth it. If you have a college near by contact the elementary education department, they need to get experience.

  • In home daycares here average 800 a month for daycare, centers run around 1200-1500 a month.  We managed just fine with sending our daughter, but now with two, my salary would hardly be more than daycare, and I'd much rather be spending my time at home with my babies.  I'll be starting a home daycare.
  • In my area, the daytime home care nannies are looking for 10-15/hr, and the daycares are looking for $1400/month.  I have to do more research, but it's freaking me out a little.  My boss also gave me the option (since it's only him and me) to bring a pack and play to work.

    We'll see what happens!

    Good Luck in your search!

  • In my area if you use an in home daycare the cheapest (still with a good quality) you can find for a baby under 1 year old is $800/month.  The average is $1000/month.  To go to a daycare center (KinderCare, Children's Choice...) it is $1200/month for the baby room.

Our DD will be starting Kindergarten this year but since both MH and I both work full-time she will need to do Kindergarten enrichment with after care which is $480/month.  We are looking at close to $1300/month for care if we use an in home daycare so we are thinking of hiring a nanny instead.  It is all sooo expensive but we will work it out somehow.

  • Thanks for some of the ideas!  I'll keep looking around.  $500 - $700 is what I've found so far for the providers who do daycare out of their homes, the centers around here are about 1000/month.  (I live in WA state.)

If my husband was still working we could cover it just fine or I could have stayed home.  Our LO was a big surprise so unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to save and plan, and of course would not have picked this time to return to school!
