Ameda Users come in

For my freezer stash I pump directly into the bags.  Today I pumped into a bottle and then transfered into the bags.  I noticed that the bottle said I had 3.5 oz and the bag said 4.5oz.  I am going to be super pissed if all the bags in my stash are short an ounce each.

Any one experience this?

I get a different volume measurement between bottles and bags too.  My thinking is the bottle is probably a more accurate measurement.  The bag has to depend on how it's held, how opened up it is, etc.  (I use the Lansinoh - not sure what you use.)  If this helps - I just pumped into Medela bottles today and got the exact same measurement when I transferred to an Ameda bottle (I misplaced the cap of the Medela - that's why I transferred).

  • I would definitely not measure milk with a bag.  Bags are not really accurate because they aren't solid.  They can squish and make it look like you have more milk than you do.  I hope you haven't been measuring your milk with the bags this whole time.  Yikes.  Hopefully, they were sitting just right and you got the right measurement, but you might want to use a bottle to measure from now on.

  • You absolutely do not want to use the bags to measure. They say on them "approximate measurement". I always pump into a bottle first anyhow because it's more secure, I don't have to worry about it toppling over.

I would mark all those bags with a marker so that when you pull them out you know they may not be correct ounces that way you use them at home or combine them with other milk for daycare so you don't short your LO.

Nope - just recently I have been able to start working on my freezer stash.  I have about 15 bags frozen.  Apparently I have 15 less oz than I thought:( I will be marking those bags and moving on:(
