Update on Gavin's speech- LONG

I know a few others here are also dealing with this issue so I wanted to share an update :-)  We did speech therapy last summer for a while and then we switched daycares and this one has worked with him much more and he has steadily progressed since starting there last November.  He has moved from not talking much at all, to talking all the time even if we can't always understand him.  But I still felt like he was behind his peers.  His teachers told me that they knew he COULD talk, he just doesn't ever speak up in a group.  They have to seek him out and make him talk 1 on 1.  He even avoids playing with the other kids a lot of times which breaks my heart.

So yesterday we took him back for another speech assessment thinking we needed to start up sessions again.  DH and I sat quietly and watched the whole thing- both of us sure he had "failed" and would need therapy again.  And then the therapist came back in to go over the results and told us that he scored average or above average in every area!  The only parts that he couldn't do were skills for the 5-6 and even 7 year olds!  So no more speech therapy!  He just needs lots of encouragement and praise to get him to try to interact more with the other kids and volunteer to answer questions and stuff at school.  She said that at this point, she thinks his lack of speech is more behavioral and him just not feeling as comfortable in a group.  So relieved!  So his teachers are working with him to encourage him to participate and be more vocal in class and we are going to sign him up for some sports and other activities that will hopefully help draw him out of his shell.
