So at my appointment this week I found out I've gained 10lbs so far in the pregnancy (8 first trimester, 2 second trimester). I'm currently 15 weeks.
During my first trimester I HAD to eat every two hours or I couldn't get up off the couch without dry heaving. I also wasn't able to be active because I was sick all day long, every day until about a week ago.
Before pregnancy I had a fast metabolism, was really slim and wasn't a big eater at all. Friends IRL are amazed at how much food I've been needing. During the first trimester I tried to eat a ton of fruits and veggies, but also had a lot of pb and j sandwiches (it got exhausting to try and figure out what else to eat every few hours when I was so sick).
My eating has slowed down with my slowed sickness, and I've only gained 2 lbs since 11 weeks. I just feel discouraged with my strangely changing body and am afraid that I'll gain so much weight and not be able to shed it after the baby.
Thanks for listening to my rant.
Re: Feeling discouraged about weight gain -rant (No flames please)
I know exactly how you feel. I was 95 lbs and 5'2 when I got pregnant. I used to be able to eat any and everything and not gain a pound. I hated it bc I had no boobs or butt, but I did have an awesome stomach. Lol.
Anyways I gained 9 pounds two months ago and 7 pounds this last month. I am only 27 weeks and have already gained 35 pounds!!!! It is really hard to go from being that small to so much bigger. I try to think of it as my body gaining the weight I was lacking, if that makes sense. I don't worry about it too much though beause everyone has said it will just fall off! Try not to stress about it because you will loose the weight again and right now your body is just keeping the weight it needs. Good luck to you!
I know how you feel. I've been feeling so discouraged, too. I know it's normal, but at a point where I don't really "look" pregnant, so it's hard. With my first, I gained 50 pounds. Granted, 3 days after his birth, I had already lost 30...but still.....
I think it will all even out in the end. And you will totally lose all the weight. It took me about 8 months, but I lost mine.
Good luck and hugs.
I have also gained about 10lbs and I am 13 weeks. See, before I was doing about 6 hours of cardio a week as a gogo dancer in nightclubs, I was eating small meals. I am usually tiny.. 5'6, 110lbs.
I havent been sick once and have always had an appetite. My dr. said I am good and maybe I will just plateau. I also work out about 4 times a week doing some cardio and classes. He also said it could be water weight. It is all in my belly.
Thanks for letting me vent!
Two angel babies 11/09 and 4/10
Before DD, I was 95 lbs (I'm 4 foot 10). I gained 25 lbs. My body went through a lot of changes. But I was able to lose 19 lbs of the baby weight within the first 6 months (the vast majority was not long after DD's birth). The rest, I was still working on when I found out I was pregnant again. Mostly because I was worried more about DD and work/school that I didn't have time to worry about working out.
Don't worry about the weight gain. You need it for the baby. It sucks because you're body changes a lot more than you realize and it happens almost over night (yes, you're pregnant, you're going to get "fat"... but it's the quickness of these changes that gets most moms). Remember, a lot of it will go away after the baby is born. The rest, will just take a little dieting and exercise. But, you're pregnant, and can't do much for it right now.
I was pretty similar early on...but it slowed down. I had gained 7 Lbs at 18 weeks and was kind of frustrated, but now at almost 26 weeks, I have only gained 2 more pounds and am up 9 total. My dr says this is right on track for 25 lbs gain.
I am not doing anything differently, my body just really wanted to hang onto weight at first.
I have gained 12 lbs and was NOT tiny to begin with- I was overweight.
I started out my pregnancy hoping to keep my total gain to 15-20 lbs since I was overweight to begin with. The first tri was not kind to me- I was so sick and all I could stomach was carbs- pasta, bread, bagels, etc- things I was used to eating very rarely.
I stressed about it for a bit but am done worrying about it. Now that I CAN stomach better foods, I am eating a balanced diet. Im not eating junk and I am trying to make the healthiest choices for me and baby. I will figure out the weight loss once baby is here.
I totally understand this--a lot of women gain more quickly in the beginning and then it normalizes in 2nd and 3rd tri. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you are eating healthy and getting exercise, and curbing excessive junkfood. I was the same way in 1st tri (this pregnancy and the last one)--gained a bunch in the beginning (7ish lbs), and both times it has slowed WAY down in 2nd tri, fluctuated and lost a pound here and there even. I struggled to stay active both times in the beginning, and I think that is half of why women gain a lot at first (eating more + not getting as much activity).
1st tri sucks, and I think it's one way for our bodies to get our fat stores up for pregnancy. I am having a total repeat this time around as last time, and last time I gained about 29-30 overall, and lost all of it in 2 months pp. If you are out of the sick/tired phase, things will really turn around as far as the needing to eat every few seconds and no energy for exercise. I feel so much more normal now, and the pounds are not packing on quickly because I can eat more normal (still more than pre preg, but not like 1st tri) and exercise routinely again.
Also, if you have a fast metabolism and are healthy like you say, you will lose it afterwards, don't worry. I have never ever known a thin person pre-preg that did not bounce back after pregnancy (no health issues or complications of course).
I know how you feel, and it seems like when there is a "weight gain" post on here there are so many women who have barely gained anything.
I was up 12-14 lbs. at 20 wks and really started worrying about it, but then finally I just realized that if I am eating healthy, exercising as much as possible, than there's no reason to worry.
Plus I think that different women gain differently, some early on and some later. I have a friend who gained 80 lbs. with her first and she is now skinnier than she was in high school. It just all depends on your body.
I gain very quickly in pregnancy and last time gained about 60 lbs total. This time I've really been watching what I eat (and the amount) and I consider myself to be doing a good job to have ONLY gained 10 lbs at 16 weeks. (BTW, I lost the 60 lbs by about 6 months).
Your body knows what it needs. If you are staying active and eating healthy, there is nothing to worry about.

Sorry ladies, not on the same page as all of you.
30-40 pounds throughout your pregnancy is NORMAL. It's considered entirely "baby weight". Stick within the guidelines and you'll be fine after delivery. You will bounce back to the same weight pre-pregnancy. If you plan on breastfeeding, you will also burn approx 6-800 calories a day extra just feeding! Plus you'll shed any extra pounds running after 1 year old, too!
I've gained 18 pounds so far and will gain another 1 pound a week until I give birth.
Honestly, I love every pound of baby bump.
I could have written this one myself here.....I was already chubby at the time we conceived from stress and relocation and re-adapting to my new life 5'2" 156 lbs - but now at 19 weeks 180. My OB that I just DUMPED told me flat out that I needed to join a gym and not gain another ounce.....
During my one u/s they measured my placenta / baby and other items and told me that 24 lbs or more was all that plus mucus.
Soooo I was right there where I was supposed to be then right? According to the Dr. I was still over weight and was warned not to gain anything before the next visit.
But a word - if you stress yourself like I was the weight seems to stay and grow - but if you just eat healthy and exercise when you are able to and how you are told to your body will do whatever it needs to and will not keep anything more.
Ha - I totally have felt like that reading some of the other posts. And I totally agree with you - I think it is my body just adjusting the way it specifically needs to. Thanks for the encouragement
aw Thanks - that's encouraging, glad to know I'm not alone
I feel like this may be me. At this point I'm not ravenous anymore and it seems the baby has slowed down it's raging hunger a little bit
