North Florida Babies

Hello, Ladies! I'm moving to Pcola in March and have some Q's.

NIOC Pensacola, the Navy base there.

Are there any ladies there that can help me prepare a little bit? I'd like to know which neighborhoods are good for kids. Is there military housing available there, or is it just renting out in town? I've had conflicting reviews from friends who've lived there for either school or were stationed there. Some say it blows, and others miss it.

Also, how's the Craigslist out there? Here in San Diego, it's really good- almost anything I'm looking for can be found there. It's not super imperative, I'm just curious. What are local attractions, what are good places to go with small children (Less than 6yrs old) and are there any good beaches or springs nearby?

Thank you for any info you can give me! I'm super excited to be going to Pcola because all my family is in FL, but I'm so nervous about going to a new place again. I've never been there.

  • Hi Tiffany. This board is not very active.  I rarely check it.  But, I'm in Pcola and wanted to respond to you.  (There are a few Pcola ladies on the North FL Nestie board if you're interested.)  My step-dad was military, but we didn't live on base....so I really don't know much about the housing availability.  The part of town where the base is located isn't really the best.  There's not a whole lot there.  If you don't mind having a drive to the base (30ish min), the schools/areas in Pace and Cantonment are best.  I know there are others, but those are the areas I'm the most familiar with.  Anywhere in Pensacola is just a short drive to the beach.  Pensacola Beach is really pretty in my opinion.  There's also different sides (a sound side and a gulf side).  While the gulf is prettier, people with small children often prefer the sound b/c it's much calmer.  I'm not a Craigslister, so I'm no help there.  There are lots of parks and museums here.  The Naval Aviation Museum and lighthouse on base come to mind.  There's also the TT Wentworth museum downtown which has a hands-on children's learning area.  Even more options if you want to do a day trip to Mobile, AL (The Exploreum, Battleship) or other surrounding cities.  Here's one site which features cheap or free activities to do with your young kids in the area.  https://pensacolawithkids.com/  Anyway, I hope this helps a bit.  I wish you the best with your move!
  • Hi Tiffany --

I was born and raised in Pensacola. It's a great place for kids and for families. My mother was in the Airforce but we never lived on base. I agree with the part that the base is not in the greatest location (you'll need to drive to get to shopping, markets, attractions, etc.). With that said, Pensacola has a ton of things to do. I moved away for college many years ago but I am still biased that Pensacola Beach is the best beach in Florida...and I've been to my fair share.

Cantonment is a nice area but it will depend on what you are looking for. There is also a lot more traffic in Cantonment as it has built up in the past ten years. Pace is more off the grid, but is still very nice (a bit of a drive from the base). I grew up in the country so I can only attest to my own surroundings.

This is my first post on here but I thought I should chime in since I know Pensacola so well. If you have any questions about the area or anything just let me know. :)

  • Thank you ladies! I've been told the area around the base is a bore... but after being San Diego, it'll be nice to be somewhere quieter. ahrn.com had some rentals listed in Pace, but it's so far away! Don't know if I want that.

  • I know this response is super late. I live in Pensacola right near the Navy base and an elementary school teacher here.  It is true that the West side of town near the base isn't the greatest, but not horrible either.  There are not as many restaurants and things like that on this side of town, but it's only a 15-20 minute drive to the mall and lots of restaurants on the east side of town.  As for schools, there are a few AWESOME schools on this side of town like Hellen Caro, Blue Angels, and Pleasant Grove.  However, you need to be careful about picking a house or apartment on this side of town to make sure you get into one of these three schools because the others are not that great over here.  Good middle schools would be Bailey, Ransom, and Workman.  Good high schools would be Tate, Washington, and West Florida High.  WWW.greatschools.net will also help you out.

Cantonment is really nice.  I actually work at a school on that side of town and it takes me 30 minutes to get there.  It's really not as bad as you might think.  They have better neighborhoods over on that side of town.

Hopefully I wrote this in time to be useful for you!
