11 Week old and a car trip- eeek!

Hello!

 

I am visiting my sister tomorrow- so it will just be me and my little daughter who is 11 weeks.  It is 1.5 hours and usually she does good but she is usually colicy in the evenings so I am especially worried about the drive home.  If she does start crying-- how often would you pull over or console?  Sometimes she will cry in the car seat and I will hold her feed her etc and she will still cry when I put her back.  I am just nervous about it!!

    I am not sure, but good luck. I leave Friday for a 4-6 hour car trip to CT to NJ. I am so nervous, but she loves the car.

    Does she like the car? My first loved the car, and would sleep the whole ride anytime we went anywhere!! And she was otherwise a very fussy baby!

    Usually she likes the car but there has been a couple of times when she was just in a bad mood and cried the whole trip-- we are kind of in a small town and have to drive a half an hour to get anywhere anyways.  :)

    I'm sure she'll sleep through the entire trip!  If not, then if she cries I'd only pull over if she was beginning to get hysterical... kwim?  Pulling over, consoling, then having to put her back in the carseat will only prolong the misery, so to speak, IMO.

    Good Luck! We took DS on an 8 hour car trip across Texas when he was just shy of one month, to see his great-grandfather. We're lucky he sleeps in the car, but unfortunately the night before I had only gotten one hour of sleep. And I can't sleep in the car. I had my first ever venti chai tea from Starbucks that day...

    Whenever we pulled over for gas, he woke up and I nursed him for 30 minutes, changed him, and he fell back asleep in the carseat. We got really lucky.

    I would probably only pull over if LO was really upset to that choking/hoarse stage or your 1.5 hour trip would take all day!

    We're taking DD on an 8-hour trip to my MIL's next week (9 1/2 weeks) and I'm concerned.  She doesn't fall asleep in the car much and it will be pretty hot with a lame car A/C.  Should be fun  Tongue Tied

    Are you the only one driving? If not, have some bottles prepared to give while on the ride. If our DS gets too fussy we roll the windows down in the back seat to create the vibration and white noise; it usually helps if he is fussy. If it doesnt work then I always know that he needs a diaper change or to eat. GL, take some soft things for LO to look at to help keep the attention. We did a 2 hour car trip (total of 4 round) and it worked well for a baby that doesn't like his carseat.

    I do trips like this 2 to 3 times a week for doctors appointments. Make sure that you feed her before you leave the house, as close to departure time as possible. My LO usually gets drowsy after she has eaten and we get in the car. She is a good rider, I don't let her cry much because I can't handle the screaming in an enclosed space and I feel like it's better to just pull over and tend to her than to make me a nervous wreck while I am driving. Usually i can feed her a little and put her back in her seat and she will go right back to sleep. Make sure that she does not get cold (we drive a tahoe and I didn't realize how cool it gets in the back seat). I also learned last weekend that If i roll down the back window on her side the noise will put her to sleep (and warm her up). Just be prepared to stop. Usually on a three hour trip we stop at least once. But, there have also been times when she has made it the whole trip. It really depends on the feedings (she's EBF). Good luck!
