how much should a 6 week old be sleeping?

LO has been SUPER fussy and difficult the past couple of days.  She was a champ earlier in the week when she slept for most of the day (I'm attributing that to a growth spurt), but the past 2 days have been awful.

I was just curious though, how much sleep should she be getting?  Last week she was averaging around 15 hours of sleep.  This week... about 11 hrs.  Is this normal?

  • I'm curious about this as well.  my LO hardly sleeps at all during the day.  i'm talking 5 to 15 minute naps here and there and i've tired EVERYTHING to get her to nap (nursing rocking swinging singing bouncer etc.)  she's totally 10 hours of sleep today and that was all between midnight to noon today (not straight through of course).  i can tell she's tired too but just fights napping

  • Oh yes that is normal! My 6 week old is the same way. Your LO should be starting to get an idea of day and night now. So LO will be up more during the day and less at night.

Also- there's a 6 week growth spurt which could account for the fussiness.
