  • I just finished number 3!  Cabinet of Curiousities was awesome, although I felt that the way the bad guy was eliminated left a bit to be desired.  I've moved on to "Still Life with Crows" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

We get most of our books from stores, both new and used.  I wish I could use the library, but our libraries in the area are awful.  In fact the one closest to our house told us that because of a law passed in 1969 we are unable to access their books without paying a considerable fee.  So we said no thanks to that.

  • Can I join in? I'd like to pledge 4 books. So far, I've completed one- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I finished that last week. I'm currently reading Catching Fire, also by Suzanne Collins, and Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I'm not sure if Wicked really counts because I started it in March, and I haven't really touched it since about April.
  • Don't worry about missing Monday - you're life sounds so crazy right now I think the book check-in is probably pretty low on the list!

Anyway, I finished Henrietta - it was good if anyone is looking for a non-fiction, science/human interest book.

I'm now reading "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro (3 of 15 - since I stopped pumping I don't think I'm going to make it!)

Question of the week: Where do you prefer to get your books from and why? The library, big box store, used book store, borrowed from friends, electronically, etc.

I prefer my Kindle now but otherwise I like library books (I hate spending $ on a book I don't end up loving).

I'm glad you liked Cabinet, but yes, the end is a little strange. loved Still Life as well, but its creepy as hell!!

I am jealous that you're reading all of these amazing books! Mine are all packed up for the move!

ETA: What is this about paying for library books?! That is crazy!

With the few extra days, I finished Magic Hour, so I'm at 6 out of 10!

Question: I get 98% of my books from the library. Sometimes it skeeves me out, but I am such a book "slore" that I couldn't afford it any other way Wink

  • I think I've missed every single posting of the check-in since it started, so I'll just jump in here if that's ok. :)  I just finished Tina Fey's "Bossy Pants".  I think she's hilarious and fantastic, so of course I loved the book.   Last night I started "A Stolen Life" by Jaycee Dugard.

As far as the Question of the Week, I'm kind of a special snowflake.  I vastly prefer having a 'real' book in front of me that I can own and keep.  However, I've been reading so much more since I bought my Kindle.  Even with a baby, I've read more in the past 8 months than the previous year before that.  So since it's what is getting me to read more, it's my fave.

  • I finished The Mammoth Hunters! That's 11. Still working on the Book of Lost Things.

Well...I love to get books from the library but lately I've been downloading to my Kindle. It's just so easy...sigh! I really do prefer paper books but I'm lazy, lol.

kj07 - 3 out of 3 (Game of Thrones by George RR Martin)

I finished my challenge and it's not even August!  Go me!

Brick Road was very uneven for me.  Parts flew by and in other parts I just wanted to put the book down and move on.  I'm glad I finished it though, I don't like giving up on a book.

And now since I've read 3 new-to-me books that have been sitting in my house for over 6 months, I am finally letting myself go back and re-read Game of Thrones.   The HBO series was fabulous and it's been quite a treat to re-read and place all the nuances and smaller story-points within what HBO used for the TV series.  I love Peter Dinklage and was so excited to hear that he'd been cast as Tyrion Lannister.  He's the only character from the TV show who's voice I heard in my head while I'm re-reading the book.

Question of the week:   I don't have an e-reader so I guess I prefer hard copies.  I used to like borrowing books.  Between my mother and several friends, we used to only buy a book or two a year but be able to read 9-10 new books.  Unfortunately I don't have many reading friends like that where I live now.  With the budget cuts to our city, it's hard to find library that is open on the weekend.  So I now prefer big box and used book stores.  I definitely prefer paperback or trade paperback to hardcover though.  Easier to transport.

  • I knocked out two more books, A Storm of Swords and Water for Elephants, while I was camping and over the weekend putting me at 5 out of 10. Right now I'm reading Kiss at Your Own Risk by Stephanie Rowe.

Lately, I've been getting books on my nook because well, that's what it is for. I really miss having a real book in my hands though. Don't get me wrong, I love my nook. It's super convienient, light weight and I can even play on the internet with it but nothing compares to a real book. I miss going to the library and just wandering up and down the aisles wondering what I'm going to find. I miss having to ask the librarian if they have a plastic grocery bag I can have because I just checked out more books than I can carry. Most of all I miss the accomplished feeling you have when you finish a book, snap it closed and toss it on the table. Sigh.

I love Borders. I am really sad they are liquidating. I don't know where I will get my books now. :(

  • We're just keeping track of how many books we've read this summer?

Hmmm.... I'm a really fast reader but I'll try to figure out how many I've read. Off to count....

  • Okay, I've read at least 11 so far. (maybe more but I only counted ones I'm confident were started after the end of my school year on June 18th.)

I guess I'll make my total summer goal 20 since I have 4 more to read by August 9th. I have a road trip and a flight before I head back to school the week of August 18th so that should give me more time for reading!

Currently reading Outlander and an Eloisa James book- I like to have a book on each floor! Outlander is long so I may be over reaching with my goal but we'll see!

QOTW: I like to go to the used bookstore or Target for my favorite authors since I know I will reread them! I currently have a bunch checked out of the library and will decide whether to buy them late based on how much I like them.

  • Oy, I'm still working on The Woods.  I have been so busy at my new job that I'm exhausted when i get home and don't feel like doing anything.  Except playing with LO. :)  I prefer to get books from Barnes & Noble or Amazon if it's something I know I will keep.  If I"m trying a new author or something, I LOVE paperbackswap.com.

I have "The last time they met" by Anita Shreve on my dining room table but haven't started it.

I usually get mine from friends or the library... sometimes both through a friend who always takes too many books out of the library at once and alwas tosses a few my way.

Our library online ordering system is good. You can get on the list for books I believe a month before they are released and you can pick up and return at any library in the state that uses the online system.
