hello- introduction and want input

Just want to say hello to you all.  I am a 22 year old mama from the Bay Area who is looking forward to some great advice from you guys- I wanted to start to meet people with a fun conversation about first baby books, I have my favorites- little engine that could, cat in the hat- but what are your guys?  just curious if there are new ones out there that you think would become classics...my pediatrician said online (here) that babies love rhyming and well, to just hear the sound of your voice- but interactive books with pics are good to graduate to as well.  What do you guys plan on reading to your baby?

  • Dolly Parton has a program called the Imagination Library -- if you qualify, your child gets a free book in the mail every month until their 5th birthday. I qualified, and it's sponsored by the United Way in my area. DS has gotten a free book every month and he loves them!

    Can't hurt to look!

  • Starting off early here with a mix of board books and some longer stories for night-time feedings if DD (yay first time to use that acronym!) thinks it is time to be awake. I got these at a local library book sale where you gave $3 and got a grocery bag to fill with books - so you might try checking with the libraries/schools in the area for a similar sale.

The best "educational" tool right now though is just a black and white picture book where I show and tell the objects to her.

  • I've started a collection of books for my son as well. He's not here yet but I figure it's never too early to start. A few of the ones in my collection are; Where the Wild Things Are and Goodnight Moon. I'm also going to look into some of the Baby Einstein books - I hear they're great :)
