Totally random question about planned c-sections

If anyone here knows... I just found myself wondering last night after talking to DH about his CW who is having a planned repeat C in three weeks but she has been having really strong, sporadic contractions right here recently.

If she goes into labor before her planned section, do they just let her go ahead and have a vaginal birth?  Or it might be different under her circumstances because her first birth was a section, too (despite all the recent evidence supporting VBAC).

However, say someone is having a planned c-section for a completely non-medical reason (they don't want to "wreck" their vag; something really stupid but the doc goes along with it, lol) and they go into labor before then.  Do doctors typically go ahead with the c-section anyway according to Mom's birth plan? Or let her deliver vaginally?  Or does it depend on the doctor?  Or do they do what the mom wants?  I don't even know why I ask this... just got to wondering, lol.

Re: Totally random question about planned c-sections

  • I don't know what happens with purely elective sections. But a friend of mine had a c-section with her first child and when she was pregnant with her second they had scheduled another c-section. Well she went into labor before that and was 6cm when she got to the hospital. She decided then if she had gotten that far she might as well try to have the baby vaginally and her doctor supported her decision. She was able to have the baby vaginally with no problems. Which turned out to be a really good decision because she now has four kids and four c-sections gets pretty difficult.

  • In *general* I think that if someone with a scheduled c/s goes into labor beforehand, they show up at the hospital for a c/s.

I guess the exception would be if she was on the fence about a VBAC and decided last minute she wanted to go for it, and the OB/hospital was supportive of VBAC. Or if she shows up pushing in order to get around a VBAC ban. But usually it will just get you bumped to the front of the c/s line.

My situation was similar- LO was breech so a c/s was going to happen, but my OB was supportive of me waiting until I went into labor to go to the hospital.

  • My SIL labored and couldn't get the baby past a part in her pelvis??? so they did an emergency C for her first birth.  So, they planned a C for her second, but they only do it a week or 2 in advance and as with her first, she went 3 weeks early...so she was in labor, but they just admitted her and prepped for the C-section.

  • My SIL had her first by C-section (after long labor, long pushing, etc).  So when she was pregnant again she expressed some interest in a VBAC, but in my opinion wasn't very proactive about it.  She had her repeat section scheduled for 3 days after her due date.  She went into labor 1 week before that and showed up at the hospital 6.5cm dilated.  They sectioned her.  I have no idea why because at that point it seems like she was progresing just fine and I imagine she could have been successful with a VBAC.  I am curious to know why they did the section instead of the VBAC, but I won't ever ask her.  Her baby was also well over one pound lighter than her first 9 pounder.

  • My friend was scheduled for a c-section last week. Her water broke and she went into labor the night before. She showed up at the hospital at like 2 AM, and they sectioned her.

I don't know if she could have asked to VBAC at that point and chose not to, or if she wanted the c-sec.

  • My O.B. determined on a Friday, 3 days before my due date, that a section would be scheduled for Sunday. I started having contractions around 4pm that evening (as soon as I left the hospital for suspected pre-e) and I called the on call doctor at 2am Saturday night after experiencing terribly painful but random contractions (I'm pretty sure now that I had back labor). Some every 20 minutes, some every 3, some every 9, etc. I was told that even though I was scheduled for C-section that my contractions were not close enough together to come in and to wait 6 more hours until my doctor arrived. When I spoke to my OB at 8am she was surprised to hear I was still contracting and said I could come in and get a sleeping pill and get checked but that they would likely send me home. When I got to the hospital I was about 4-5cm and was sectioned right away, about noon on Saturday. I know now that my OB's recommendation for the section was against ACOG guidelines and I'm not pleased that my labor concerns were not taken seriously. So yeah, next time we will be trying for a birth center VBAC.

  • I know with my SIL they had a scheduled CS planned and if she'd gone into labor before that date, they would have done a CS then and there.
  • It depends on the medical reason and the mother's wishes.

  • When I worked on OB, if they had a section scheduled, they had a section (except for the one lady who showed up pushing...we didn't even manage to get her to the floor; baby was born in the ER waiting room, caught by an aide!)

The main reason for always doing the section was that unless her doc was the one on call, we had no idea why the mother had been scheduled for a c-section. We could ask her, but in reality the mothers "They said the baby was really big" might actually be "They said the baby was big so I freaked out and asked for a c-section."

  • My cousin's wife had a c section with the first, so they had scheduled a csection for the second.  She went into labor before the date and ended up delivering natural (no meds) b/c the baby came too fast.
