Pregnant after IF

Having only one child?

DW  have been talking about when and if we will have another baby. Being that we used DS, we have to decide quite fast and buy more vials sooner then later.

Anyone else thinking about having only this one ( or just this pregnancy with those of you pregnant with more than 1)

Why or why not?

Re: Having only one child?

  • We've decided not to pursue any more fresh cycles.  Unless one of our 3 remaining frozen or a miracle happens, we'll only have 1 child.  The toll of the fresh cycle on my body was too much (I dodged serious OHSS complications twice and fear 3x will be pressing my luck) for us to chance it again.  We were OOP for our IVFcycles (and now have college tuition to save for), so we don't have the funds available for adoption.

It was a hard decision, but one that we've both "come to peace" with.

  • As of right now, I'm on the fence about it. But - I guess we've made out decision by DH having a few vials of sperm frozen so that he can move forward with testosterone replacement therapy - which is known to make counts plummet - but he really needs to do it for other health reasons. He's been putting it off for so long and I didn't want him to any longer.

SO - we've got 2 frozen embies and a couple vials of sperm - so I guess that will most likely be the extent of any additional treatments we seek after this pregnancy.

  • Ultimately, we would love to have another.  We have 4 frozen embryos and also plan on seeing what happens before doing a FET.  If I have to go through fertility treatments again to get pregnant, I feel it will be a little easier as I know what to expect, but hopefully it won't be any harder.  Also, since there is no way to predict the future, I have made sure to enjoy every second of this pregnancy, whether it was a good second or an uncomfortable one, since it may be my only time to experience it.

TTC #1 since 7/08 After 3 years, 2 losses, 3 rounds of IUI, and one round of IVF, we finally have our dream come true! DS born 7/30/11

  • We've decided that if we do have another child, we will not pursue treatment next time around. If I get pregnant with no assistance, we'll be super happy, but if not, we're happy with just 1 baby. :)
  • We are done after these three.  Can't afford anymore and I don't want to do IF treatment again.  DH will be getting snipped after the babies get here-even though we had male factor I don't want any surprises later!

  • For us, DH has such a low volume, and TF. We are going to try and freeze sperm, since we want to start him on testosterone therapy by the fall. Testosterone therapy normally gets rid of all sperm. We will probably try again at some point with our frozen embie and frozen sperm but if it doesn't happen, it's ok.. We Feel so blessed to have this pregnancy.

  • We're planning to play it by ear.  I want to see how things go with this first baby and just enjoy her.  Then we'll see how finances are and how complete/incomplete our family feels before deciding on more kids.  Ultimately we think we'd like 2-3, but I want to just enjoy our daughter first and go from there.

If I were you and had to think about this sooner than later, and it were important to me that siblings be from the same donor, then I would much rather spend the money and store the sperm just in case than run into issues later with that donor being sold out.

  • we're having twins, but this will most likely be our only pregnancy. We have 11 frozen blasts, but w/ my baby's rare genetic disorder, and my blood clotting issues, my OB actually told me she thinks it is best if I don't have another pregnancy. A little hard to hear and a little sad for our remaining embryos, but I think it may be best for our situation.

  • We have 2 frozen embryos.  I have always said I wouldn't do a fresh cycle for #2 but I guess I should never say never.  If there's only one in there baking now, it's likely we'll do a FET at some point in the future.  If there's 2 baking, then I'm not sure what we'll do.  We've never wanted more than 2.  We shall see!  I'm okay with only having 1 and I never thought I'd say that.  My niece is an one and done (my sister is 38, never married to my nieces father and they aren't together any more ... I don't see her meeting someone, marrying and having another in the next couple of years considering she isn't even dating yet).  My sis, husband, niece and I are VERY close so I'm fine with our child and our niece being pseudo-siblings.

This for us too - we've also tossed around the idea of adopting our 2nd child since we really have a heart for adoption too.

  • We're not really sure at this point if we will have another child.   We're going to play it by ear. It will depend on whether we feel we can handle an addition child and the expenses of going through fertility treatments.  Hubby had to do HCG shots 3x week in order for us to have this child...none of the meds were covered by insurance. Additionally, we would have to pay out of pocket for IUIs. If we can swing in financially, it will depend on if hubby wants to go through all of the shots again to restore his fertility. It's his body, so that will be his call. I will fully support his decision...whatever that may be.
