Help for activities for 1-yo

My parents are daycare and I will forever be appreciative for the money and worry they are saving me! But, I feel that they aren't very creative at trying new things with her or even just trying to locate new things to do. Do anyone have great websites for activity ideas and/or things to do in the Triangle? Or, just have some off the top of your head? I want them to be relatively inexpensive or free, so no $300 classes, please.

Unfortunately, a lot of crafty things are out because DD still puts most things in her mouth. I had her color on a piece of paper as a "get well" card for my mom after knee surgery, and she pitched a fit when I made her actually color with the crayons rather than let her eat them!

  • The Wake Co. libraries have free events for like tot time.

Some of the parks and rec buildings have free tot play with mats and stuff for them to crawl and play on.

There are always local parks when its not 100+ degrees out.

The malls have play areas when its too hot or too cold or raning.

Have you looked at the free publication Carolina Parent? They usually list what's going on in the area and things to do too.

  • Raleigh Parks & Recreation offers a lot of classes that are quite affordable. Here is their "Leisure Ledger". (Its a PDF file). Music, art, dance, swim lessons etc. They do also host "Tot Time" which is basically free open gym for toddlers with toys, ride ons, balls, mats, etc. I'm pretty sure its only through the school year season though.

Ditto PP, libraries offer Rhyme time or Story time for babies of all ages. Even if they just take her to the library weekly, they can look at books together and take a few home. Barnes & Noble usually does a story time too.

As far as crafts go, you can do finger painting in a plastic baggie. Squirt some paint on a paper, slide it in the bag, seal and let her "paint" through the bag. No mess and its a good texture lesson for her too. This site has some nice ideas for art with younger babies, and a lot of it is mess-free.

You might check out Meet-Up groups. Maybe there are groups for grandparents who watch their grand kids?

  • Thank you both so much. I just haven't had time to do the research I should to give them ideas and they wouldn't know where to begin to look. This really helps.

  • I'd second the library system and the parks & rec. Don't forget if you live in a suburb, they often have their own P&R group. Ours (in Garner) has a tot storyhour at one of the parks where they read a nature-based book and then have an activity that goes along with it. Some of the activities can be spendy ($6-25/week or event) for the length of time you're looking at but they usually have all the supplies as well.
