Pregnant after 35

Question regarding 2nd Nuchal results

So I got my call last night with the test results.

1 in 1300 or 1400 for Downs

1 in 50,000 for Spinal Bifida

1 in 150,000 for Anecephaly

Less than 1 in 250,000 for Trisomy etc

Less than 1 in 380,000 for congenital heart defects.

I thought that these were excellent numbers but was told that means that I still have a 10-15% chance the baby with have Downs and that I should get the Amnio.

I mean if 37 year olds have a 1 in 250 chance normally and I am that far over that isn't that good?

I was just starting to relax about how Kieran was doing and now instead am having a major panic attack over whether I should go for the stupid test.

  • Who said you have 10-15% chance and you should get the amnio?? It's still YOUR choice.  I also think those are excellent numbers. I think you can feel good about those numbers. Remember that the screening tests are meant to catch as many problems as possible, which is why there are so many false positives.  And your risk for downs is way way less than 10-15% chance. I'm not a math person but even I can tell you that 1299 out of 1300 is the chance that everything is ok and I think that's more than 99%.

  • It was my OB who is already getting more and more on my sh!t list everyday this week.  He seems to be oblivious and only wants to get more money from me.

  • How is that possible?...according to my math a 1 in 10 chance means 10%...1/10 X 100.  therefore 1/1300 x 100 = 0.076%.  Hardly 10%.  IMO, he must use the new math...the one that sees every test as an increase to his pocketbook.

In the end, you need to weigh the risks and decide what gives you the peace of mind to get through the balance of your pregnancy with minimal worry.  Personally, I would not do amnio with numbers like that.

  • I'm no math person either.. but that just doesn't make any sense!!!  My numbers were 1 in 100 bc I am now 40, but were like 1 in 80 or something with the NT scan..and my hubby said our percentage was still lke 3 percent or something really really low.. I was freaking thinking it was 20 percent chance.. I forget how he figured it out and don't have a working brain.. but WHO told you that your chance is 10-15 percent? That's crazy!!!

  • Get rid of that doctor.. find someone new.. really .. make a change and just do it.

  • That percentage is totally wrong.  My blood work came back 1:65 and so we did a level 2 u/s and they went up to 1:140.  Even with numbers like these, we still have less than a 1% chance for having a baby with Down Syndrome.  We didn't do an amnio and we are very happy with our decision.

I agree with PP, you should definitely find a new dr.  My dr was wonderful when I got my results, he set up the level 2 u/s and a meeting with a genetic counselor who really explained everything.  He gave us our options, but never pushed anything.

  • I can't believe that the doctor said you have a 10-15% of Down's with those numbers. DId you ask how he came up that percentage?  Are you sure it wasn't someone reading it over the phone who read it wrong??

  • Err, no... Those numbers are awesome.  What on earth is with this guy?  You say he's highly rated?  So weird!

  • I despise your doctor.  If you get tired of despising him, I will pick up the slack for you.  He either needs to explain why he thinks the way he does or STFU.

Do yourself a favor and drop this bozo.

  • WTH?  I don't trust your doctor considering he can't do basic math to figure percentages.  Your numbers look excellent.  It sounds as though the doctor is trying to bully you into the testing.  While I am absolutely not against amnio, it should be your choice completely and blatantly lying to you about the risk percentages as a scare tactic is not okay.

  • As a result of all of you lovely ladies pointing out the fact that my OB is an A$$ I am attempting to write private emails to the other OBs in the practice that supposedly will not see me because I am "his patient"  to explain to them my current feeling and why I see this as mandatory....

With any luck one of them will come around and see what I am soooo distraught.

Oh and the only way his numbers apply is if it was 100 in 1400 chances so either he cant do simple math or he is clearly a moron

  • Just wanted to echo what everyone else has said: your Dr. sucks! Your numbers are great! Our test results came back with a 1:25 chance of Down Syndrome and even with those scary numbers... it was only a 4% chance.

We ended up having an amnio and it turns out the screening gave us a false positive result! The baby is perfectly fine Smile
