what do you do when...

you can't understand someone on the phone?  I had to call United airlines last night to add on DD to my ticket, and i could not understand the representative at all.  It was becoming awkward because i kept having to say "I'm sorry, I didn't quite get that" and things like that...and having him repeat it wasn't really helping.

How do you handle situations like that???

  • I know it's rude but hang up and call back, you'll likely get someone else. If you end up getting the same person just say you got disconnected. You could also ask to speak with a supervisor.

  • Ugh, I hate when that happens!  Once it got so bad I just had to tell them that I couldn't understand what they were saying and if they could transfer me to someone else.  The person they transferred me to was also difficult to understand, so before we got going I immediately asked for a supervisor who happened to speak without an accent.  It was annoying, but I didn't really feel bad.  You don't want to accidentally commit to something because you can't understand the person.

  • Most times, I'll ask if there is someone else that I could speak with.  I'll apologize and all... "I'm sorry, I'm having a really tough time understanding you.  Is there someone else I could speak with?".  Normally they get sorta upset with me, even though I try to do it nicely, but what do they want from me?  I'm not going to drag out a conversation having them say things a million times and get my blood pressure up from pure frustration in trying to make out what's being said to me.  It's MUCH easier to get someone else on the phone.

This is exactly what I do. And yes, sometimes they get upset but most of the itme you are paying for some kind of service and deserve to talk to someone who you can understand.
