Advice needed for sinus issues too

So sorry - I never blow up a board like this but I am confused.

I have never in my life had sinus issues.  But since LO was conceived I have a constant stuffy nose.  No air goes in or out.  I tried nasal spray but then came to the awful conclusion with no help from Dr Butthead that the nasal spray is causing the blood pressure changes.

I do not have a fever - nothing of any discoloring coming out of my nose.  No cough.  Just sneezing, then stuffy like I have never felt in my life.  If I continue the nasal spray I used that helped I feel like I am selfishly only caring about myself.  I did try saline flush and that didnt exactly work at all to be honest.  I would prefer a natural nasal spray but cannot seem to find any.  Sooooo

Do any of you have any experience with that and have any advice on how to best deal with this?

  • i have been CONSTANTLY congested since my bfp.  unfortunately, nothing has really helped.  :(  i haven't tried it, but there is a product for kids called "little noses" that may be okay for you to use.

good luck and i hope you find something that helps!

  • I'm not exaggerating when I say I am beyond grateful to you for telling me about this chance at breathing.  I feel like one of those dogs that cant stop panting.....Always walking around with my mouth open and chapped lips is not the best look in the world - I thought boys were supposed to give you beauty not steal it....meanwhile what on earth do I look like?  A hot stinkin mess with a gaping open mouth all the time

  • This happened to me with my last pregnancy and my doctor prescribed me a nose spray which didn't help at all. It is a symptom of pregnancy though. I have heard that a saline wash could help but I am sure it would have to be used daily. Hope you find some relief. (((hugs)))

I too have constant congestion and have had horrible headaches to boot.  I use a netti pot to clear out my sinuses and it makes me feel less stuffy.

Just a suggestion.  It takes some getting used to but it does clear out the gunk.

  • I swear by Neil Med Sinus Rinse.  I used it a ton during my pg last time around when I had a terrible head cold and couldnt' take any OTC meds.  It's totally safe to use during pg and it works (at least for me).  I was using it like 6 or more times a day when I was really congested. It's just a saline rinse in a squirt bottle.

    See link...

BTW, I am TTC at 40 and hope to be joining you ladies again really soon.  Testing next week.  Really hoping for a BFP.

  • I do have that sinus rinse at home.  Maybe I didnt use enough saline solution?  All I got was a nose full of cold water and a headache.  lol

I did freak finally when swallowing was impossible due to the lack of air coming in through my nose and went to the pharmacy.  The said try Ayr for day time use since I am at work and a full flush would be just gross in the work bathroom...

I will see what happens....thanks ladies.

  • I use warm water and one packet of the crystals with the bottle filled to the top fill line.  Squeeze 1/2 the bottle up one side, then the other 1/2 up the other.  This comes from a girl who has had 2 sinus surgeries to aleviate horrible sinus problems.  I still use the rinse almost everyday and more often when I have a headcold.

  • Sounds like allergies maybe? I use Benadryl. My doc said it's totally safe to use the entire pregnancy and not to worry about it. I use a children's dose--and only half at that. It works pretty well and I only take it at night. I've been stuffed up since the beginning too. Good luck...I hope you find something that works!

  • The Dr office didnt even want to hear from me when I said I was having a big issue with breathing....instead of becoming alarmed they just said hold on took a message and said yeah the Dr will get back to you when he can.

And he had his assistant call - he insists that I take the antibiotics ....WTH!!! I do not take antibiotics unless it is necessary for life.....I was very clear about not taking anything un natural....

A$$HAT!!! Good lord if I don't kick someones a$$ by the end of the day it will be amazing.

  • I know you wanted natural, but I end up having to use Mucinex (the plain stuff not the DM).  It doesn't dry you out like a decongestant does.  I've had chronic sinus issues though, and through a loverly complication, if I get a sinus infection, it will eventually (and permanently) affect my hearing.  **sighs**  So I can't just do the nasal spray unfortunately.  If I were you, I would go to a natural food store like Whole Foods or Sprouts and see what they have for nasal sprays there.

  • Luckily I live around the corner from a Whole Foods so I will be trying that.

I am such an advocate for not taking things like antibiotics unless it is a serious issue that no one in the medical community understands me....

  • I had this too.  Prior to pregnancy I took nasal steroid sprays (I have chronic sinusitis) and during I used a product called Ayr, which is a saline rinse. It helped but honestly I was stuffy my entire pregnancy.

The pregnancy itself does this, with swelling of tissues (inside your nose too) so the main relief is delivery.  I'd use that or a Neti pot (lots of people rave about them) to clear your sinuses. Hopefully it will help.

  • Unless there is green or bloody mucus coming out of your throat/nose, I would not take Anitbiotics (sorry if TMI).  They don't work if you have sinusitis, a virus, allergies or just swollen membranes.  If the goop isn't green you likely don't have an infection to warrant antibiotics.  As someone who used to get 3 or 4 sinus infections a year, I know.

  • As PPs have stated, I find the Netipot really helpful. It's not really somthing you can use on an "as needed" basis, though.  You need to use it every day - sometimes twice a day.

I use mine in the shower in the morning but I don't seem to need it at night unless I'm coming down with something.  Also, don't use cold water - owie :)

  • I use the netipot when I get stuffy, and earlier in the pregnancy I felt stuff every morning, so I used it every morning.  It really does help.  Good luck!

I have been using Ayr when the nose isnt completely stuffed and it has helped keep it from getting worse.....Too bad though since now I feel like Steve Urkel...heheheheheheheeheh Snort

I had someone show me (the custodian at my school where I teach is really into netipots).. I gagged at the sight of the water coming out of his nose... (I'm so visual.. I could puke just thinking about it).. however.. if you turn your head and pour it in, but tilt your chin down a bit.. the water just run out..  It is the absolute most disgusting thing..... but it really does work..totally cleanses...and will moisten it up for you.  I had to try it more than a few times to get it to work.  I bet you could google a demo on youtube.. I would gag though

  • Benadryl fast dissolving strips are a lower dose.  Less chance of drowsiness and helped me immensely.  Perfectly safe.   They can be harder to find but you can order them on amazon.

I was in the same boat but am so happy now.  I also am an allergy sufferer so I was very relieved to finally have some relief.
