intense exercise after birth

Before I was pregnant I ran a lot and want to get back into a rhythm with things...my doctor who I connect with online (here) said that I need to wait about 4 weeks.  But another doctor said that after a c-section I need to wait at least 6 weeks...how soon did you guys start- I don't want to hurt my body but I think my stress level will decrease. thoughts?

Re: intense exercise after birth

  • I was told to wait with 'any' exercise at least 2-3 months.  We didn't discuss 'intense' exercise, but I was told it takes the 'inside' scar - the scar on the uterus - at least 6 months to heal, so if I were you, I'd wait with intense exercise for the 6 month mark.  When you reach 2 months, you can start doing some stretching and light exercise and very slowly build up from there?  The more easy you'll take it on your body, the faster it will heal.  C-section is a MAJOR abdominal surgery, which is something many often forget ...  I'm nearly 4 months post partum and only now beginning to feel sort of 'normal' again.  I also had a c-section.

Good luck and take it easy on yourself - no lifting, avoid stairs, it's very important for you to give your body time to recuperate.

  • I'd wait on intense exercise. Stick with walking and slow jogging for a few months before you get intense

  • I started lifting weights and cardio the monday after my 6 week check up when i was told it was ok.  I run a lot now.  3.5 miles in 35 minutes twice a week, 1 hour yoga once a week, and 1 hour lifting once a week.

  • I did not have a C-section so I started walking a few miles daily around 4 weeks and back to normal ( i work out A LOT) at 6 weeks.  It felt great except my boobs (I'm bfing) and I didn't even really work out AT ALL during my pregnancy.  I had placenta previa, was very very sick all of the time, and worked full time and coached a dance team so that didn't leave me much time.  (not to mention it was fricking FREEZING here so I couldn't even go out for a walk)  Anyway, listen to your body and do what feels good and of course, what the doc says. :)
  • I didn't have a c-section and I was a marathoner before getting pregnant.  I started jogging again at 4 weeks and ran a 1/2 marathon 13 weeks pp, with my doctors approval.

  • I got the clear for rigorous exercise at 6 weeks and I had a c-section. You could always start reallly slow and work your way up.
