Pregnant with fertility treatment? What about next time?

Hi May Mommies!

Just wondering how many of you had to use some sort of fertility treatment to get pregnant, and thought maybe the whole process "fixed" whatever was wrong.  I had to take hormonal shots to get me to ovulate since I had been over a year without a period, but the treatment worked the first time.  I wonder when I stop breastfeeding if my period will come back, and we can try for #2 or will have to go through the treatment again.

Any others out there with thoughts or stories?

Re: Pregnant with fertility treatment? What about next time?

  • We were ttc for 18 months, with infertility treatments beginning around month #13.  We got pregnant fairly quickly after beginning intervention (first pregnancy after intervention ended in m/c, then shortly after our second pregnancy was successful).

I haven't talked to any physicians about a plan for next time, but I strongly feel that when we are ready to ttc again, we'll pursue similar intervention after just a couple of months of trying.  I'm not going to go through 12 months of infertility alone again.

I think it really depends on your diagnosis what will work the second time around. I know for me, we were given only a 2.8% per cycle with intervention and less then 1 without. You can see in my siggy what we went through. Even if we won the lottery and got pregnant on our own i will still need medicated support for hormone issues and meds for clotting. We plan to only try for a few months before going back to the RE when we are ready to try again.

  • I understand.  I never really got a diagnosis other than unexplained infertility.  I ovulated on my own, but never got pregnant.  After 3 cycles of Clomid, we got our DD.  The only explanation the RE gave was possibly having been on the pill for 20 years.  So I'm fearful to start the mini-pill Rx I was given by the OB.  But I also don't want to get pregnant right now, maybe after 6-9 months of BF.  Honestly, I have no idea how it will all turn out.  But I know (b/c of my age), we won't wait long to try and won't wait much longer if we aren't successful on our own.

  • I have a friend who tried for 3 years before getting pregnant with twins through fertility treatments.  She never tried to prevent pregnancy because she figured she couldn't get pregant.  When the girls were 9 mos old and 2 weeks after returning to work, she got a BFP and had 3 children under 2!!!

I dont know from personal experience but my best friend needed daily injections to O for her first two babies. When she found out she was pregnant with her third she was already 13 weeks because she never thought she'd get pregnant on her own so they werent using protection.

  • We got pregnant through IVF.  My DH has very very low sperm count.  The chances of use ever getting pregnant on our own is less than 1% ASSUMING his sperm count stay that low.  So we when we want to TTC again, DH will go in for a sperm analysis to see if there has been any changes.

We are basically planning on having to use IVF again for our 2nd baby, but of course would be thrilled if we didn't have to.  We do have 9 frozen embryos, which does makes things a little difficult emotionally.

  • I have endometriosis. In order to get pregnant, I had surgery to laser the tissue but it is a temporary fix only. We were about to start fertility meds when I got pregnant with the boys. It doesn't grow during pregnancy but once my cycles return it will come back. I'm not sure how long until it will affect my fertility again, but we will use backup just in case. I will not have the same surgery to get pregnant again.
