MN help for Caeli

Our DD2's name will be Caeli (pronounced Kylee) but we're having a very hard time coming up with a middle name. Ann/Anne, Marie and Jane/Jayne are all out because of people we know associated with those names. Our last name is 3 syllables and ends in "ay" (like day), so between her first and last names, we really can't use names that sound like they end in a vowel. So far all we've come up with that we like are Elizabeth and Alyse/Elise. With such an unusual first name, we want to go with a more traditional MN. You ladies always come up with great names. Any suggestions for me?

  • I would go with anything traditional.

Just an FYI, I would NEVER have pronounced Caeli as Kylee. I would have said Kaylee.

I'm sorry but I don't get Kylee from Caeli.  That's Caylee if anything to me.

    I know a Kylee Nicole. I think that's pretty.

I thought it was Kaylee too.

  • Kylee Elizabeth is nice.

Is Caeli a legitimate spelling or something you just came up with to be unique?  I'm not a fan.  At all.  I would have guessed it was Kay-lee or Say-lee.

  • Agree with PPs. Caeli looks like Kay-Lee to me. Behind the Name has Caelie pronounced as Kay-Lee as well.

    This, exactly.

What you're trying to do here is similar to me saying "We are naming our child John. Spelled John. But its pronounce like Jane."

It just makes no sense and you will forever be telling people how you want her name pronounced.

First of all Indifferent and I agree with all of this. I see CAY-LEE out of this not KY-LEE in any way shape or form.

  • For those wondering, Caeli is not a made up name; it's Classical Latin pronunciation is Kylee while the Ecclesiastical Latin pronunciation is Chay-lee. In Classical Latin, Caeser is pronounced Ky-zer (not See-zer, like in modern times). To change the spelling to match the pronunciation also changes the meaning (i.e. Kylie/Kylee means boomerang while Caeli means heaven). We both love astronomy, so the bigger draw for us is the meaning in choosing this name. DH and I have given her name a lot of thought (and even requested feedback on it from this board previously) and despite all of the challenges, we are set on this as her first name. We REALLY need help with a MN though, so suggestions for that are much appreciated!

I didn't know if it was made up or not, but after saying Caylee as my first thought, I was wondering if it was Chay-lee like Caesar too (sorry, I do like it when my college Latin comes back!).  I like Elizabeth with it and also:

I would have pronounced it as Kaylee, just an FYI.

I also love Celestial names. I know you're set on Caeli, but I also like Estelle/Stella, Celeste, Luna, Danica, Selene, and especially Soleil. I think those names are more "unique" and "unusual" than Caeli because every other girl is named Kaylee, Kaelie, Kailey, Kylee, Kylie, or some variation. The point is that they SOUND the same, so changing the spelling doesn't do more than confuse.

Here are some filler middle names: Anne, Jane, Rose, Marie, Lynn, Louise, Lou, Mae, Elizabeth...

Here's the meaning of Caesar, so I'm not sure how Caelie is a derivative of that. At that point, I'm not sure it fits your astronomical criteria.

    CAESAR

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: Ancient Roman

    Pronounced: SEE-z?r (English)  [key]

From a Roman cognomen which possibly meant "hairy", from Latin caesaries "hair". Julius Caesar and his adopted son Julius Caesar Octavianus (commonly known as Augustus) were both rulers of the Roman empire in the 1st century BC. Caesar was used as a title by the emperors that came after them.

She was using Caesar as an example of the pronunciation of Caeli.

I kind of went with the moon and stars theme for the middle name as well.

  • I appreciate your explanation behind the name, but I have to agree with others that your DD will be correcting people for the rest of her life.  Not everyone has a background in Latin and knows all of the information you provided.  I understand that the meanings of names are important to some people, but is it more important than her having to constantly pronounce her name and possibly explain its meaning for people who are confused?

I like Nicole and Adele for mn.

  • How do you figure that says Kylee? Because you said so? Please spell it Kiley/Kylee  . That spelling is horrid and a normal person would assume Kaylee by that spelling and even then THAT is a horrid spelling of Kaylee.

  • From a previous poster's list, I think Caeli Diana is beautiful.

I don't have a problem with the name. It may not be might style, but it's a legit name and a legit pronunciation. So go for it!

Yes, she will have trouble with people getting it wrong, but unless your name is Ann Jones, someone somewhere will butcher your name.
