2 Month Shots

Just curious...

Did any of you give your LOs Tylenol before getting their 2 month shots? I have heard nothing but horror stories of how miserable babies are after getting these done.

Re: 2 Month Shots

  • There are reports, or rumors, that giving LO Tylenol before can make the vaccines less effective.

We bought some, took it to the pedi to get the right dosage if needed, and never used it. It depends on the baby, but DD was fine. She wanted to nurse a little more than usual the hours immediately following, and then slept on me the entire evening. No crying, no digestive issues, no fever. Just a little sleepy head! Don't get too nervous about it.

  • I'm hesitant to give my son anything before I know he needs it. We just nursed afterward and for the rest of the day pretty much constantly. He didn't run a fever, but he was a little irritable going to sleep that night. Mommy pacifier (aka my nipple) cured it. He was fine the next day.

    This!

We go Thursday, and I plan to give it after if she needs it for comfort.

With my oldest, the only shot that had a negative effect on her was the 18 month MMR, she had a fever for a few days after and was pretty out of it. Other than that, shots never bothered her other than the injection, and she only would cry for a few seconds, I nursed her and she was over it! Don't be too scared! A lot of babies do great!

  • Our pediatrician told us not to give Tylenol before, only after (if necessary).

  • We had our 2 month shots today, and I am waiting until she shows signs of needing it before giving it to her. She is still snoozing in her carseat so I don't want to move her.

  • My LO was cranky at night and had a downgrade fever.  He would only sleep for 30 mins and cry.  Either wanting to be held or fed.  He was fussy for the next few days and that was it.  I heard that it gets better after the 2 month shot.

  • We had pretty much the same experience as all the other PP's.  My son got his 2-month vaccines today and aside from the immediate crying, he's had no problems the rest of the day.  He did sleep a little more than usual this afternoon, but otherwise he has been pretty good.  I bought a box of infant acetaminophen, and haven't opened it.  We'll see how the overnight goes, but so far -- we're 12 hours in with no probs.

  • Don't give anything beforehand, our pedi told us this is no longer the standard practice because it can interfere with the vaccines. Xander was just a little extra needy that day, and had a low fever that night, but he had his shots at 10 am, at 4 we gave him a half the rec. dose just to help with the soreness in his legs and he was fine. He had a small fever at night so we gave him some before he went to bed and he was fine. A little extra fussy the next day or two but nothing terrible like I expected.
  • Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I am feeling much less stressed about taking him for his shots on Friday. You ladies are the best!

  • I had to give my son two doses of infant tylenol. (Half a dropper each time, 6 hours in between though) because he was so upset and out of it.:( Poor baby.

  • I have never dosed for shots, unless the baby runs a fever.  You don't want to give Tylenol prior to the shots because a) it deems them less effective, and b) you don't want to mask a potential fever if one were to show up.

The only time I would ever give Tylenol is if the baby is running a fever.  Even if they are fussy, that's a normal reaction.  I am very leery of putting anything into my baby that they don't absolutely need.

  • Mason had his 2 days ago. He was awesome until 6 hours later and screamed for an hour until the Tylenol kicked in. We gave the Tylenol before the shots, which I guess helped till it wore off. All babies are different, but I would just be prepared. He was sore on his legs yesterday but is great today.
