Hello! weight loss affecting milk supply?

I posted this on the breastfeeding board but I wanted to get your guys advice as well as fellow mamas of april miracles :)

I have lost 10 lbs since pregnancy and I think it is affecting my milk supply.  according to my pediatrician (who I connect with online here) it shouldn't and losing weight while breastfeeding is actually a side affect of the process.  But I have a funny feeling that maybe it still does affect my flow...what do you guys think?  do you guys notice any variation?

Re: Hello! weight loss affecting milk supply?

  • I was getting anxious to lose the weight after having little one so I started to diet a bit and I noticed that my milk supply had decreased so I stopped dieting and it came back up after a week or so.  Personally I think it has something to do with it, or at least I have noticed a difference. I am trying really hard to drink a ton of water and eat really healthy to keep up the flow and continue to slowly lose the weight! Hope that helps!

Restricting calories will definitely decrease your supply.

  • If you aren't getting enough calories it can affect your supply. I've been steadily losing weight and my supply has been fine, but I also haven't been going out of my way to diet. I'm eating healthy, but the extra 500-600 calorie burn is definitely helping with the weight loss.

  • It's ok to lose weight while breastfeeding as long as you don't lose more than 2 pounds a week.  Any more than that and you risk losing your milk supply.
