Opinions on unisex names?

I personallly don't really like unisex names. However my DH is competely in love with the name Jordan for a boy, he's a huge Michael jordan fan so that's where it's coming from, but either way he LOVES the name. I was dead set against it because its become a popular girl's name, but now I'm not sure.

What do you think of unisex names?

Re: Opinions on unisex names?

  • I have a love/hate relationship with them. I think most are super cute and fun. However I will lazily admit I like the convenience of knowing right away the sex of a person someone else is talking about when they say a name.  Or if I have to return a call to someone at work and all I have is a name and phone number.  But thats chump change.

DH hates them. His name is Casey and he hates that it is a girls name, too.  Oh and it drives him up the wall when we watch a movie and the dog's name is Casey... omg i have so much fun with that...lol

  • I don't like them at all. I want someone to know if it's boy / girl man / woman from the name.

I once worked for someone named Jordan and when people would call they wouldn't know whether to say he or she if they hadn't met her. My niece is Jordan and I had suggested that my SIL spell is Jordin or Jordyn to give it a more feminine feeling, but her DH was not a fan of those spellings so she's Jordan.

  • In general, I'm not a fan of them, but it depends on the name and what sex it's being used for. That being said, I think Michael is a much better name than Jordan!
  • imageniccimax:

    eh... er.... uh

I wouldn't name my girl Taylor or something those kind of names got too popular.  However we were thinking about the name Reese for a girl, but when I told a few people they said it was a boys name (?).  I guess it depends on the name.

Jordan is nice for a boy, IMO its more a boy name :)

I agree Jordan is more of a boys name IMO, and I love Reese (okay it is my chocolate lab's name, but she is a girl, not saying it is a dogs name )

I don't really care for unisex names but I'm also not a huge fan of super trendy names either. I like classic names that are gender specific but that's just me.

I have to agree with SIL. I think misspelling a unisex name to make it look feminine is worse than using the unisex (read: male) name in the first place.
  • Also, Jordan reminds me of NKOTB and I don't think that will ever change.

... maybe I'm just a child of the 80s though...

  • If it makes you feel better I've never met a girl named Jordan but I know a few guys with the name.

Overall I'm pretty indifferent on unisex names.  I doubt we'll choose one but I don't have anything against them.

  • I don't personally have anything against them, but at the same time I would probably not use one of them for my children.  Growing up, one of my best friend's name was Jordan and so that name has always been more feminine to me because of her.  I do think that some of the unisex names have become more popular and that is another reason I wouldn't use one... anything in the top 20 is out for me Smile
  • I love them!! Enough said!

  • For me, it really depends on the name. I hate Taylor on a girl, to me it will always be more of a boy name. I think Jordan is a great name for a boy, whenever I hear the name I always think boy.

  • I HATE unisex names.  And I am using the word HATE here.  Maybe it's because my name is Randi and it is a unisex name.  I hate that when people call for me, they ask for Mr. Randi.

When I worked in customer service I had a member call in and this was our conversation:

Me: Thanks for calling, this is Randi how can I help you?

Lady: Randi?  That's a boys name

Me:  Well I can assure you I am female, how can I help you today?

Lady: Randi, umph, how do you spell that?

Me: R-A-N-D-I, is there something I can help you with today?

    Lady: Randi...that's a boys name

Me: Can I help you today or not?

    I HATE unisex names.

  • We seem to have a unisex theme in our family going...for the females anyway...just nicknames. I'm an Andie (Andrea), my Mom is a Bobbie (Barbara), my MIL is a Pat (Patricia), my step-daughter is a Devin, and if we have a girl...she will be an Alex (Alexandrea). Growing up I hated it...I was teased all the time. I can't wait to put my daughter through the same torment.  Ha!  I think Jordan is 50/50 girl/boy.

  • DH's name is Jordan. And he hates his name. I don't think it would be so bad, though if his middle name wasn't Leslie (a horrid family name). Maybe a good strong masculine middle name could offset it, but otherwise, unisex names are iffy.

  • Well I have a Jordan but I will say the downside is that I live in Chicago so of course everyone assumes it's a Bulls thing. But in reality my DH insisted on the name and he's from LA and a die hard Lakers fan. He also wanted to name Ds2 cause I named Ds1. But to me it will always seem more like a boy name. I don't know any girls with the name. So anyway his middle name is Daniel so it's clear he is all boy. My other son is Jackson and I had a female patient by the same name and I did feel really stupid that I assumed it was a boy.

I have SO had this conversation!  My name is Erin, and even spelled the feminine way, I get "isn't that a boy's name?" all the time.  Didn't stop my daughter from choosing Everleigh for a girl, but I guess that name is unusual enough that you can't even really call it unisex.

  • I guess I'm in the minority here about 'unisex' names... I was/still am in LOVE with the name Elliot for a girl... call it my total affinity for Scrubs and crazy arsed 'Barbie'. I also used to watch a show (long time ago) called Sisters and the sisters all had boy nicknames... Alex=Alexandria, Frankie=Francesca, Georgie= Georgia and Teddy=Theodora...

I'd love something like that but not sure what we'll end up with.

  • I'm on the fence about unisex names. I can take them or leave them. I am however in love with girls having a boy nickname. I've always wanted to be called Chris (it never caught on :(), and Samantha (Sam/Sammy) is high on my girls name list.

  • I personally really like Jordan for a girl. In general, I like the idea of unisex names, but that's because I'm a crazy feminist and I enjoy subverting the dominant paradigm. :D Not for everyone, but that's me. I am surprised to see that people have such strong opinions about it though. I can appreciate that certain names are easier to pull off than others, depending on their popularity. Yay for paradigm subversion, but I wouldn't want my kid to get harassed about it constantly either.

  • I don't care either way. DS name is Taylor but it was my maiden name so that was going to be his name either way. This next one will have a gender specific name just becasue that is what we like.

So funny because a girl I went to highschool with, her name is Michael :)  I think people all over are using names to go with either boy or girl.  I know a girl who just named her DD Elliot.

  • I'm actually kind of mad at parents that take names like Jordan...(which screams BOY to me) and make them girl names.  Almost all the boy names we like have recently become unisex names.  It makes me mad, bc I don't see them as girl names at all.  I hear them as girl names, and think..."why would those parents give their girl a boy name?"

But then I love girly names for girls.

90% of the time I probably hate them. But it's really case by case.

I love the name Avery (even though it's trendy which is typically NMS) for a GIRL
FWIW.. to me Jordan = 100% boy

The thing is, these are just nicknames.  If my name was say, Amanda or Miranda and my nickname was Randi, that would be TOTALLY different.  Because then if I got tired of Randi, I could change it.  But I am stuck with Randi.  AND I don't get a nickname.  Lose-Lose.

  • I seem to lean more towards unisex names for girl names, such as Parker, Jordan, Hayden, Ashton, etc. but not so much with our boy names. DH is the same way - he wants a less girly name for a girl as well. But all of our boy names are masculine - Will, Dawson, Donovan, Marshall.

To me neither are unisex...Sydney to me is totally girl and Blake to me is totally boy.  Maybe it's just bc the only Sydneys I have known are girls and the only Blakes have been boys.
