Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone ever have a slow amniotic fluid leak?

I noticed about two hours ago when I went to the bathroom that my pantyliner seemed very moist (I HATE that word). It just didn't seem right so I smelled (I know, TMI) and it smelled sweet. I know discharge increases now but this is not normally what I smell like. I also have had very very little amounts of "snot" when I wipe the past few days/week.

About 3 weeks ago I went to L&D for contractions and spotting and have been contracting and spotting ever since. I went to the Dr. about 1 1/2 weeks ago and my cervical length was good but it was "soft".

Problem is I am a Director of a department at a college and today is the 2nd day of classes - very busy! I know if I call the Dr. they will tell me to come in. The clinic is about an hour from work but close to home. I guess what I am saying is I don't want to leave work if everything is fine. So, I was hoping someone might have some experience with leaking to give me an idea if that is what might be happening? I know the Dr. knows best and I will likely end up going in - just looking for personal experience. TIA!

  • Personally, I don't think I would risk it.  Sending lots of T&Ps that everything is okay.  Please keep us updated.

  • That sounds EXACTLY like a leak.  I had that happen when I lost my twins but I was only 18 weeks.  Not to scare you, but I would definitely get checked out.  Can you go on your way home?

  • Are you sure it is not pee? Or crotch sweat (it is so hot here, not sure if so by you)?  Gross, yes, but realistic questions, and hopefully what you are experiencing.  There is no "safe" amount of amniotic fluid leakage.

Not to freak you out, and this is truly a "worst-case scenario", but if the amniotic sac has ruptured, the concern is that there is a conduit for infection to get to the baby -- meaning this really, really needs to be confirmed or ruled out.  In some cases of spontaneous early rupture, Drs wil advise delivery within 24 hours to prevent infection -- and at 28 weeks, if that was the medical decision for you, you'd want to have time to get Betamethasome injections (steriods to help LOs lungs) in advance of delivery.

Hopefully you are leaking something far less scary.  Keep us posted!

  • I am pretty much in similar situation as you.  I am also a workacholic, but have been putting this pregnancy before work so my advice is that you go get your urine checked.  About 2 weeks ago, I noticed increased amount of discharge and thought it was normal and started putting pantyliners on.  I feel like my pantyliners are soaked by end of work day.  My discharge was clear and watery, but changed to yellowish tint and started to have fishy odor to it.  After increase in groin pain, discharge and smell, I went into L&D and found out that I had baterical vaginosis infection.  They performed a test to check if I was leaking amniotic fluid also and that was negative.  At this point, if something seems odd, definitely let your doctor know about this and let them make the call.

I feel quite confident that it is not pee or sweat (yes, I have had a fair amount of that lately) as this smells like nothing I have ever smelled before. I wouldn't think much of this at all except for the smell...

I guess I best call. Thanks for the input ladies!!

  • ((Hugs)) Is the discharge continuing? Is it basically a watery consistency?

I don't have experience with a slow leak, but my water broke last pregnancy. For me, I never noticed a gush, just a continual large amount (I mean like a dripping pad in less than an hour) of water-like discharge. It did smell kind of sweet.

Personally, I would call the doctor. Maybe you could go to L&D after the day is over?

I called my Dr. and he is out. There is no other OB on staff at my clinic today so I called L&D. The nurse I talked to was an idiot and told me it was hard to say over the phone. I asked do I need to come in and she was like ahhhhh, ummmm, well, you "can" come in and get checked out. I was thinking, NO, the question is "should" I come get checked out. Back to square one...

  • I would go in.  I thought I was leaking fluid a while back and they just did a quick swab.  No big deal.  I hope it's just normal stuff happening!  GL!
