DH is doing a charity bike ride (24 hours of Booty) in Charlotte next weekend and we'll be staying in downtown (the Holiday Inn Center City, to be precise). He'll be tied up at Queens University/Myers Park neighborhood most of the time and we plan to go & watch a little bit, but I'm looking for a few places to eat and something to do with Miss Wild-Thing E. Thankfully my parents are coming up from ATL to help me out since DH will be on his bike most of the time.
First on my list is Discovery Place - it appears to be walking distance from the hotel. Am I missing some other "not to be missed" place to take a 2 year old? I'm trying to plan out where we'll eat - specifically lunch & dinner on Saturday (in the downtown or Myers Park area) and then a brunch on Sunday (not too picky about the location).
And finally, am I silly to take E on a ride on the Lynx train (literally just out & back)? She is obsessed with trains and it looks like it runs on the weekends and a station is super close to our hotel. It looks to be a little nicer than the MARTA in ATL.
Thanks a bunch ladies!
Re: NBR (kinda): Need Charlotte recs please
Wow! Good luck to your DH!
I've heard great things about Discovery Place, but haven't yet been. The public library in Uptown (which is what we call the downtown area here) has a great (and free) children's area with fun things to do throughout the library. https://www.imaginon.org/
There's also an area in uptown called EpiCenter. It's more bar/night life focused, but there are a number of restaurants, a bowling alley, and a movie theater.
Some great restaurants (IMO) in the general area (but not uptown) are Cabo Fish Taco, Big Daddy's Burger Bar, and my favorite (with a reservation or you have to waaaait) The Cow Fish (sushi and burgers). All kid friendly.
For brunch, I'd recommend Pewter Rose, 300 East, and Jackalope Jacks.
The last time I took the train, it was clean and quiet and a fun experience for my 2.5 year old nephew. I've only gone into the city for ice cream and back out, but I suppose you could go the opposite direction.
Have fun!
Discovery Place is great, but it's for older kids - maybe ages 7 and up. Imagion though is great. I take Ella there at least once a month to get some new books, storytime, and it also has a little play area for toddlers.
You could also go to Latta Park - it's a nice park with a spraygrounds (would be a short drive from uptown).
There is a Discovery Place Kids that is still fairly new in Huntersville. It's about 15-20 minutes north of Charlotte.
I was just coming back to post this! It's a wonderful place for toddlers. It would be well worth the drive.
