BLW question

I have been reading up on BLW as DD will be six months before we know it (haven't decided if we are doing 6 months adjusted or actual, but that's another post...) and I have a specific question:  how do you do yogurt, oatmeal, and other foods that really need to be eaten with a spoon?

Re: BLW question

  • We do a pre-loaded spoon.  I put food on it and then give it to DS.  He does pretty good.  I've heard of using "dippers" (like breadsticks), but DS hasn't figured that out yet.  And I took advice from another mom on here and make oatmeal super thick so he can pick it up with his hands.  Be aware though -- it's super messy!!

  • From nearly the beginning of BLW, we would preload the spoon with whatever food we were offering, then just give him the spoon.  I don't remember if we helped him guide the spoon in his hand to his mouth the first few times, but DS caught on really quickly.  He would either pick up the spoon from his tray, or take it from us if we offered it to him.  I guess the biggest thing is that you don't "force" feed him.  Admittedly, we would sometimes feed him if we were out to eat or at someones house that we didn't want him making a huge mess.  Sometimes he still just opens his mouth for us to feed him, but mostly he does it on his own.

  • Thanks, ladies!  I guess I am not opposed to helping her eat on occasion if she wants me to!

  • I just  fed stuff like that to her with a spoon myself.  You get to choose exactly how far on the BLW spectrum you go. :)

  • We didn't do much for foods like that until DD2 was a little older. She did great eating real food but would spit out anything too runny like yogurt or applesauce. I make my oatmeal pretty thick. DD2 ate it with her fingers this morning when she didn't feel like waiting for me to dip her spoon.
