I mentioned before how small my DD is. 14 months 17 lbs. We took her to a nutritionist for some perspective. They did blood work to make sure she didn't have a metabolism issue, thyroid etc. They did say that she was anemic and to increase her iron. We have iron drops and increased meats and iron rich foods.
Is it dangerous at her young age to be anemic? I tried looking it up and will try again to find some info.
I re-posted from toddler page. TIA
Re: my 14 month old DD - anemic
being anemic at any age is not good.. but I heard that many children are anemic b/c of how picky they are, which is why most kids take supplements.
i would just keep up with the supplements and give her iron enriched foods. Does she like beans? lentils? if not, try re-fried beans. I know -easier said than done. My son wouldn't eat any of that stuff so i pretty much prayed.
Is she allergic to soy?
No, not allerigc, she is on soy milk. That's another debate I'm having! I read the posts on that too. I make lentils on a regular basis for her.
I get worried about her because she looks so frail and thin. She's happy and healthy though
I would try other beans.. great iron source. Even puree it and put it on toast.
If she's not allergic, add some tempeh or other source of protein. I don't know how much kids like tempeh -i do, but it's a taste you have to acquire. Even though i'm not a fan of tofu anymore, i would rather tofu than some of the meat.
Yes! She is failure to thrive. I discussed this on a board somewhere on here last week. Thanks for mentioning it. Anything helps me. They want a urine test done and that is difficult to bag it, working on it though.
I thought Celiac is a wheat issue? She is not allergic to wheat. How can we tell if she has a malabsorption problem? Through urine test??
Celiac disease is not a wheat allergy, it is an autoimmune disease (diagnosed through a specific blood panel).
My girls with celiac disease actually aren't allergic to any foods.
Malabsorption disorders are often the cause of anemia. You might want to talk to her pediatrician about seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Ditto pp, Celiac is not an allergy, it's an autoimmune response to gluten. A urine test won't tell you if there's a malabsorption problem; it screens for other things. Has she had a full nutrient panel (bloodwork) run? FWIW, when I was diagnosed w/Celiac, my nutrient panel was horrible. I was super low on vitamin D, iron, B12, calcium, etc. despite eating a very healthy diet and taking supplements. A year later (and since my body is finally healing now that gluten is gone and I can finally absorb nutrients), and my bloodwork is perfect. It's definitely something to look into.
