babywearing in the summer?

I realize that this question is a bit premature however I figured I would ask.

IF I get into the daycare I want (knock on wood) the baby will be coming with me to work (daycare is at work). As of now, I take the bus to work and I would like to continue this with the kid (parking is expensive and the bus is free!). I was thinking that it would be nice to not have to lug a stroller on and off the bus so it would be great if I could wear the baby.

I am not too worried about the mornings since it is generally cool, but in the afternoons it can be downright hot and disgusting. It is enough to make me uncomfortable sans baby. I worry that wearing the baby during the summer will cause me and the baby to overheat as we wait for the bus. Is this a valid concern?

Thanks!

  • I would say you could always give it a try.  Wearing the baby will be easier than the stroller, that is for sure.  However, I have not wore my son all summer long b/c it is just too hot and I think I would roast.  I just normally carry him in and out of places...I don't even use the stroller much.  Carrying him or her may be easy too...that way you can switch him or her back and forth and move them easier.  Good luck w/ whatever you decide.

  • Hey I just realized you are from Washington, DC.  I can get there from where I live in like an hour and a half.  I've been there and to Baltimore several times.  :-)

I've been wearing him all summer, I just make sure to wear a thin wrap  when it is really hot out.  My husband wears him in the Ergo when it is hot too- that, or a ring sling, might be an easy choice for you, that way if baby or you gets hot it is quick to get off and on.

I was thinking about the ring sling, it seemed like it be a bit cooler than a wrap or Ergo. I registered for one in a light color. I just sorry, there is no shade at the bus stop and sometimes (if the bus doesn't come) i can be out there for-ev-er.

Ha Nice! I have never made it out to WV, but I really want to go to Harper's Ferry sometime. I have no clue if that is close to you at all.

  • DD was born in May. I took her on the subway and bus often the summer right after she was born, while wearing her. Yes, it was hot, but the prospect of lugging a stroller around on public transportation as a new mom made me not want to leave the house, ever.

I say try it. I don't know what bus rules are in DC, but in NYC, you must fold your stroller on public buses. So, IMO, I would feel much safer wearing my baby than taking her out of the stroller and sitting her on my lap with no other restraint.

  • Just make sure your baby stays hydrated and dress him/her for the weather.  Then use a carrier that's lightweight--a gauze wrap or leightweight woven or a ring sling made of linen.

I think your baby will be more comfortable in a carrier than in a stroller or car seat--up against synthetic matieral

DD and I commute to work/daycare on the D.C. Metro.  I'm more concerned about my going to work after sweating.  Also, I did walked the Susan Komen Race for the Cure w/DD during a D.C. summer when she was about 7 months ols.

  • I wore Casey all last summer (even during some 3 to 4 hour zoo trips) and have done the same this summer and I'm in FL.  During the summer months I just dress him lighter (i.e. just a onsie) and use a lighter fabric (such as a woven or linen).  Though I have carried him a lot in my MTs still and we've both been fine (sure sweaty, but I would be sweaty either way).  Just make sure you both stay hydrated.  Also you could also just make sure you always have an umbrella on you.  That way you can just pop it open for some shade and be prepared for rain at the same time.  :)
