Getting rid of the pacifier?

Ok who is planning to do away with the pacifiers around 6 mo? I'm thinking about it.... the books say the earlier the better and right now, it's causing more grief than good. DD sleeps well from 7:30-4am even if she spits it out but after that.... (which is when I feed her) she cries EVERY TIME it falls out. For the next two hours I am up every 15-20 min. It's ridiculous. Question is... would you get rid of it during naps first or just go cold turkey from the beginning?

Re: Getting rid of the pacifier?

  • DD doesn't really care for the paci, so I'm planning on taking it at 6 months. She really only takes it for a minute or two to help her go to sleep sometimes and then she spits it out and doesn't want it anymore. I plan on taking it all at once, but only because she doesn't use it much anyway. If she was hooked on it I would probably slowly wean her off. Like only allow it at naps and bedtime, then take it away at naptime and then finally at bedtime.

  • As for now, I only give it to DS when he is going down for a nap or sleep for the night.  Oh, and in the carseat, but that's because he usually falls asleep in the car (or screams because he's bored).  He needs it to soothe for now, which isn't great, but at least he doesn't want it all.the.time.

Same here. Naps, carseat, bed. She only really cries when she spits it out in bed.... Naps and carseat she's ok if it comes out.

  • We chatted w/ the pedi about the paci yesterday.  We've decided to get rid of it now.  He loses the paci and it's the only thing that calms him down a 1-2-3-4-5am... He isn't awake, but we sure as hell are, and it's just not good. We have to teach him to soothe himself instead. (He loves sucking on his thumb/hand/fist, why doesn't that work in the middle of the night? gar!)

So, as soon as he's over the post-vax-hangover, we're getting rid of them. So, tomorrow.  Yikes.

  • I am afraid if I take the paci away from Milla, she will suck her thumb and then she will never break the habit. I can take away the pacifier but not the thumb.
  • We also only use it for naps, bedtime, and occasionally when we're in public and she's fussy.

I'd like to wean her off of it before 9 months, but we may do it earlier.  She still sleeps swaddled, and every time I try and have her sleep unswaddled, she immediately reaches up and pulls out the paci...and of course gets upset that it's not there anymore.  So I'm kinda thinking it might be better to wean her from the paci first and then do the swaddle afterwards.  We'll see, though.

    Good luck!
