Questions for Breastfeeders

1.  My LO is 1mo. old and just in the last few days has dropped her feeding time from 15-25min. per feeding to 5-10min. per feeding.  Should I be concerned about this?  How do I know if she's getting enough of the "good" milk that comes closer to the end of a feeding?

 2. My LO has also started this thing where I start feeding her because she's hungry and then after a few minutes she takes herself off, and then for lack of a better word, goes ape$h!t either screaming because she's hungry and not latched OR keeps her mouth open and shakes her head all over the place.  Either way it's a fight to get her head & mouth back in position to get her latched on again.  What is the deal and how do I manage this?

3. Do you use nursing pads?  If so, which kind do you use?  I only use them when I use the nipple cream so that I don't get it on my bras or clothes.  I purchased some by Lansinoh, which worked okay but I have since run out.  One of my gf's gave me a box by Medela but I hate them because they crinkle up and don't stay in place.  Both kinds show when I wear one of my two nursing bras and if I wear a solid color shirt.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

    1. A decrease in feeding time is normal. As your LO grows her ability to suck becomes stronger. My DD is 10.5 months and her feeding time is down to 5 minutes. To be sure offer your LO both sides.

    2. I'm no expert but DD did this too. It's frustrating but just keep at it.

    3. I use Johnson's pads and have been pleased. They don't crinkle and unless I'm wearing a very tight shirt they don't show.
    Hope this helps!

  • 1- Shorter feeding times are normal as LO gets older. DS usually only feeds for about 5 mins now, if that.

2- DS did this for months, patience is all I have to offer.

3- I swear by Lilypads, they are amazing. I sometimes use Lansinoh disposable pads, they work really well.

  • I don't really remember for answering the first two. But I loved the Lansinoh pads and liked the LilyPads too. Depended on my mood (or where I was) which I used.

  • 1. Definitely normal.  A used to nurse for up to 30-45 minutes each side and now is 5-10 each side.  As LO grows our milk composition changes so I think since they stop taking as long to nurse the good hindmilk starts flowing sooner. Thats my only explanation...

    2. A did this as well around that time.  I thought it was because my milk wasnt letting down fast enough but my supply seemed fine.  Patience is my best advice for you.  A stopped after about 1-2 weeks of that and hasnt done it since.

    3. I had the Lansinoh nursing pads but used them maybe twice.  I ended up giving the box to my cousin who had a baby about 2 months after I did.

  • 1) I'll second what the others have said - she's just getting good at it so the time would cut down. The way to know if she's getting the good stuff is to see if you feel empty afterwards. If not, try pumping after and give her the bottle post.

     2) I'm wondering if either she's not liking the taste of something or maybe you have too much acid in your foremilk. But these are questions for a LC

    3) I bought breastpads from a etsy vendor. I love them. They're adorable, and didn't really show that badly in my slightly padded nursing bra.

  • Ditto everyone else....

    1. They feed longer in the beginning and eventually become more efficient. It also takes a while for your body to figure out how much milk you need to produce and regulate itself.

    2. Callie did this. Exactly. It was a huge PITA and really frustrating. The only thing that worked was time. Not exactly what you want to hear, but she eventually grew out of it. Make sure you are using a supportive nursing pillow and in a comfortable position. If you are relaxed and comfortable the baby will be more relaxed and hopefully this will help with the pulling off and freaking out. :)

    3.  I use Lansinoh pads and like the LilyPads too. It usually depends on what I'm wearing and where I'm going. I hate the Medela ones. The chemical smell is horrid when they get wet and they get too squishy. Yuck.

  • I'm just going to sort-of answer #3.  I found that my Bravado "silk seamless" bra was the best for hiding the Lansinoh pads.  The bra itself came with removable pads that gave it a nice smooth look/feel even when I was wearing the pads.  https://www.bravadodesigns.com/shop/the-body-silk-seamless-nursing-bra

  • I ditto what everyone else said for #1 and #3.  #1 is normal, do not worry.  #3, I loved Lansinoh disposable pads, but when at home I used men's handkerchiefs, folded into squares.  They worked great and were washable, so I saved money on that.

For #2 I have a different answer, she may need to burp.  Try sitting her up and patting her back.  When my LO did that, she usually had a burp that sounded like it was coming from her toes!!  May not be your LO's issue, but it is worth a try!!  And don't worry, breastfeeding gets much, much easier.  My LO is 8 months now and it is a breeze :-)  Good luck!!
