am I crazy to consider Orlando in early Sept?

my quest for vacation continues and I am now looking at Orlando, not sure if we'll actually do Disney or any of the parks, I am just looking for a place with a pool and a nice room! Just need to get away for a few days. We may go to some of the parks but we may not. Is it crazy hot? Kids will be 14mos and 34mos.

We used to go to Disney every year right after Labor day, it isn't too bad. Hot, yes, but less crowds, and usually a daily thunderstorm that comes through and cools everything off for a bit. If you are hanging out by/in a pool you should have a good time.

I lived in Florida for three years and have done Orlando at various times.  I went ?third week? of September once, and yes, it was pretty darn hot.  Hot enough to make me sweaty and cranky and constantly seeking out shade, so I wouldn't do it with my own kids because I think I'd have very little patience - and subsequently, so would they.  But I have an aversion to heat, so I may not be the best judge.

Have you considered something on the west coast, like around Tampa, so you'd have the option of Busch Gardens, the zoo, and the beach if you decide to venture away from your hotel?  St. Pete might be nicer for walking around than Orlando.  However, if your plans are to potentially just hang out by a pool and go to a park only if you feel up to it, then it's certainly fine.  There's not too much to do in Orlando besides Disney and Sea World, but it sounds like you want to just have some relaxation and not be too ambitious.

Early September is prime hurricane season, so take that into consideration when making non-refundable reservations.

  • We're going.  Three grandparents live in florida and were taking DS to Disney.  I've been there in September before and it's tolerable.

  • I live in Orlando (we're in the DC area for the summer with DH's work)... and yes, it is usually still really hot with daily rains in September. My sister and her family has gone just about every year. She always chooses September because she says it is less busy - understandably, everyone is back and school and usually won't dream of taking their kids out so early in the year!

That said, it's really hot here right now, too, and Orlando won't be THIS bad in September!

Let me know if you need any more Orlando info!

  • I grew up in Florida. Yes, it will be hot. Potentially very hot. Early September isn't that much different from late August. It doesn't really start getting cooler in Florida until October.

  • thanks, everyone!

  • If you just want a hotel with a pool why don't you consider Vegas? Cheap flights, and cheap hotels. September is still really hot in FL.
