Short luteal phase-Call Dr?

The past 2 cycles I have had a short LP.  One cycle it was 5 days and last cycle it was 7 days.  This only happened one other time back in Dec and that one was 7 days also.  Normally, my LP is 10-12 days.  My cycles have been normal since my miscarriage until this point.  This past cycle I did have a sinus infection so I don't know if that might have effected my temps or brought on my period sooner.  I don't know if I should call my doctor or give it another cycle.  She knows I chart and told me to call if I noticed anything that might be of concern.  Part of me feels I should call and see her but part of me feels like I should wait.  What would you do?

Re: Short luteal phase-Call Dr?

  • i would call.. i take it you are not doing clomid or anything this time around yet? If you are sure of your O date then 5 and 7 days is realllly short.. and the dr may be able to do something to help. You have a PCOS dx, right?

Mine were never that short.. I think the shortest i ever had was 9-10 days. but before I got pg with Eve I took B6 and Vitex/Chasteberry.. The b6 is supposed to lengthen your LP and Vitex is supposed to help you O earlier/more regularly and also lengthen LP.

  • I would call.  In fact I did when I was having the short lp at the beginning of this year.  They did bloodwork first and wanted me to use opk sticks for a cycle as they liked those more than charting.  After that my OB did talk to me about wanting to write me a rx for clomid (which shocked me bc I thought it was going to be a progesterone issue since previously it had been borderline low), but when I talked it over with DH he was really really against it.  He actually told me he would rather stop ttc than have me take it.  I was already doing some b6, but took more.  And added the vitex that melissa sent me.  Also was using the preseed, but had been for a few cycles.  That was the month I got pg.  Try some of the non-rx stuff, but I would call anyway so you can get the whole process started with them bc it took me a 2 months with the dr by the time I got the opks and all the bloodwork and results back.

ETA - I should add that it was nothing about the clomid as being a bad drug or anything.  DH just was very against anything that would increase our chance of multiples.  I hope that is not offensive to MoMs, but with him being home with the kids especially, I unfortunately couldn't just ignore his feelings about it, but figured I would not push it and re-visit it after a few months if we needed to.

  • Deep down I know I should call but I'm nervous about something being wrong.  I was really hoping not to do clomid this time.

Melissa-I don't have pcos, I have endometriois.   I had really long cycles before Abby so they gave me clomid to help with ovulation and try and shorted the cycles.

jnk-Did your doctor give you any other options besides clomid?  What did they say was causing your short lp?

  • When I asked about why not something like progesterone first, he said that some dr's would try progesterone since mine was borderline low at the last reading.  But that in his experience, my late Os and short LPs was more about a quality of egg thing.  And that he would want me to do clomid earlier rather than later (starting at day 3 instead of day 5 I believe).  He also talked about how the fact that I got pregnant with dd while on birth control also showed something.....I forget exactly what....something about my hormone levels.  But whatever that was, that was another factor in him preferring to go to clomid right away.  I also didn't ovulate at all while nursing and had to have a vaginal hormone cream at like 5/6 months post partum, so maybe that is all is a part of it.

This is how I felt.  It was really only bc of the push from  some girls on here after posting my charts that I did call.  I know for me, that once I got the bloodwork done (like immediatly - as I was driving home) I felt like so much of the worry about it was lifted.  It was like well, that's that.

  • I'd call, that does seem pretty short. Hopefully it is just a fluke!

  • Definately call. You noticed a pattern, and why wait another month if you're pretty regular? Personally when it came to TTC #2 I tried the minimal amount of time I felt was appropriate on our own, and then called my RE to get back in to start treatments right away. You know when you're ready, and they're definately not going to come looking for you!

If your Dr. says to try another month or do something you are already doing, and you really feel you want to see her...just voice that. No one is going to advocate for you but You! :) Also, no one knows your body better than you, either!

     GL! :)

  • I would call. My LP were short since the start of AF 11 months PP after DD was born. I did 5 cycles of waiting to see if it would lengthen. The I went to the doc, started progesterone and got pg right away! I could have kicked myself for not going sooner!
  • I also had a short lp. I used B6 and B12 to try to lengthen my lp. The first month I used it I got pregnant so I am not sure if it worked or it was a coincidence. I wouldn't have called my doctor but that is because she takes a laid back approach to getting pregnant. She probably would have told me to relax. But if your dr is supportive I would call. What do you have to loose. Even if something is wrong the first step would be to know about it so you can fix it, right?
