Hair Highlights *CP*

I've been considering getting my hair highlighted next week or so after I'm out of 1st tri, which I've heard is fine.

Just curious though, what your opinions are on getting highlights during pregnancy? I go to a natural salon that uses no ammonia in their dyes and highlights are wrapped in foil and not applied on the scalp, so I'm of the opinion that it's fine.

  • I chose the SS option because I wanted to say that, while highlights themselves, especially without ammonia and done with the foil method, should be completely safe, you might want to be advised that some colors can go a bit wonky when used on a pregnant woman...something about changing body chemistry.  And even though they're safe, the fumes, if any, might make you a little queasier than normal, so make sure you're in a well ventilated area.  My daughter's OB said to try to get an appointment early in the day, when there aren't a lot of people in the salon.  Hope this helps!
  • Getting mine done tomorrow, so I'm in the "it's all okay" camp.

My doc okayed highlights in my first tri too.

    Thanks for the tip, lavie!

  • I waited until after first tri and am getting them done Friday. I can't wait - it's the longest I've gone between appointments in a long time!

This is basically the same reason why I chose the SS option!  I think highlights (and even hair dye itself) is ok, but because of the change in chemistry in your hair colors sometimes don't have the same results as when you aren't pregnant.  For me that's risk enough because I don't want to go around with some wonky coloured hair!!! And I do my own colour at home because it costs WAY to much to have it done in a salon!

  • My doc said hair dying was fine after the 1st tri and that highlights are fine anytime because it doesn't touch the scalp. My sister is also a hairdresser and she said she does pregnant women's hair ALL the time

My sis is also a hairdresser and said the same thing. I'll be getting mine redone in the second tri.

  • I have a lot of gray hair so I dye my hair every 4-6 weeks and there is no way I am stopping.  I did it twice during the first trimester.  I don't use bleach since I dye it dark brown, and I do it myself.  But I would not worry about going to a salon.  Plenty of hairdressers themselves get pregnant and do hair throughout their pregnancy, and are around the fumes.
