Switched to Tide

We cloth diaper and strictly used Rockin' Green.  All of a sudden, my diapers started smelling like ammonia after DS would pee.  RnG wasn't cutting it after all, so I went against every rule in the cloth diaper Bible and switched to Tide.  The smell is gone!

Re: Switched to Tide

  • Yea I don't cd but I started using our regular detergent for DS's clothes. I was using all free and clear and they would still stink. I started by just doing his onesies to see if he'd have an issue. He's fine. I just couldn't handle him smelling like dirt!
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • We use all free and clear for our clothes.  No issues with that.  A lot of the ladies on DS suggested we switch to Tide for our CDs.

  • I am terribly allergic to Tide, so I'm too scared to try it on the CD's. I use Gain on our clothes, even DD's. Right now we're washing CD's in RnG, but I'm having the same ammonia problem as you and I end up stripping my diapers fairly regularly and washing in the RnG ammonia buster stuff, but I wish I could just use regular detergent.

  • They told me if I'mg etting the smell, I need to use more soap.  RnG just isn't cutting it.  You CAN use regular detergent!  Ask over on DS about Gain.

Hmm...I'll look into that. I've always been told that YOU CAN NOT EVER use regular detergent on CD's, but I never understood why...Huh?

I was scared crapless to use Tide.  You just have to be careful with brighteners and things like that.  You may have to strip them every once in awhile, but I'd rather strip than deal with that God awful smell.  The Tide rinses out clean.  No bubbles!

  • I found what works the absolute best with ours is Dawn...no kidding. It balances the pH and keeps all EBF stains out. I read a couple places it is such a myth about regular detergent. I'm sure a super cheap brand would thrash them but I tried Charlies (DS had INSANE diaper rash to the point of open sores with that), then Arm & Hammer sensitive with no dyes or perfumes, little better but it did make my pocket dipes repel a little bit, 7th generation (was just too spendy, really) and then read something about Dawn and have used it ever since. It is such a cost effective way to clean them. I want to try the Duggar recipe again, I used to make my own soap with washing soda, a fels naptha bar and borax. Apparently it works great on CD and is about $3 for a huge 150 load batch.
  • I use dreft and it has that fresh baby smell. it is a little expensive, but with coupons it is not bad.
  • I can't use Dreft on CDs.

  • I use Allen's Naturally on my CDs.  It's a little pricey, but if you buy the gallon and a pump, the gallon is supposed to last a year.  I haven't had a problem with the CDs smelling.

Not detergent related, but DH's grandparents keep telling us that when we start getting the ammonia-pees, it means she's about to cut some teeth. We still haven't experienced it!
