This check in is for mamas who have had to restrict their diet due to food sensitivities in their LOs or themselves.
The theme this week continues meal planning. The series is breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks series. Here is the link for the breakfast thread, and this is lunch. Last week was dinner. This week - snacks!
Any random tips, vents, etc. are also welcome.
Re: Food Sensitivity Check In
Fruit is a huge snack hit here. Bananas, pears, grapes, & strawberries are some of Ari's favorites.
Rice Chex & cranberries are a quick snack cup option. I also like the Back To Nature Gluten Free Sesame Seed Crackers
and Nana's Cookie Bars in Banana flavor
. I buy both from Amazon subscribe & save, which saves me about $1 per box vs. buying @ Whole Foods or Earth Fare.
I eat cereal like it's my J-O-B. Erewhon Brown Rice with Mixed Berries
and Barbara's Bakery Honey Rice Puffins
are 2 of my favorite gluten free options.
For sweet treats I love coconut milk ice cream, and Enjoy Life cookies in Double Chocolate Brownie.
C eats fruit like it's going out of style. He doesn't like bananas or papaya, but I think it's a texture thing. He will eat ANYTHING else we put in front of him, and a lot of it, lol. My mom likes to give him smoothies, she just mixes whatever fruit she has with ice and oj or coconut milk. Those are special treats for grandma's house, though.
Nana's cookie bars are awesome, and the no-refined-sugar part makes me not feel bad giving him a cookie from time to time (they use fruit juice to sweeten). His favorite flavors are the vanilla berry and banana. they're just super crumbly and messy, I usually have to follow up with a spoon because half the bar is crumbs on his tray!
This kid goes through raisins like they're going out of style. He'll eat them anytime, anywhere. It used to be Craisins, but he likes the raisins just as much (or more) and they aren't chock-full of sugar. Yay!!
He also loves the puree pouches, but I don't do them very often because he sucks it down in about 30 seconds, lol.
I enjoy hummus on pita or veggies around here.
In other news, we challenged dairy this weekend and it was a big flop. She started spitting up quite a bit and was so gassy. Hopefully the next time we try it will be a success!
Apple is first up. He seemed okay with it yesterday but had some hives today. I'm 95% sure the hives were due to a peach that DH gave him @ lunch time (he forgot that Ari hasn't ever eaten a peach, oy) b/c they started popping up about a 1/2 hour after that. But just to be sure we're going to stop the challenge until he's clear & start again. Doc said one each week in increasing amounts.
I think potato will be second, then carrot.

Veggie Straws, Fruit, pouch food, honey wheat pretzels, mushed avacado with tortilla chips, rice and seaweed, revolutions food sammy's etc.
special treat so delicous coconut milk ice cream sandwhich
new favorite, smoothie, coconut milk, splash of juice, and frozen fruit. he'll suck down 8oz of a smoothie within minutes.
Oh I want to update on our situation! C is well on his way to outgrowing his sensitivities, which is super exciting. When I got pregnant I un-restricted my diet (I had m/s and the only things I could even think about eating without wanting to vom were no-nos), and C is doing great. He only nurses for comfort now; pretty much only before naps and bedtime.
When he eats something directly (like the angel food cake my dumbass FIL gave him) he still reacts, but it's not nearly as severe as it was in the past. The cake fiasco gave us gas, tummyache, and bad sleep for 3 days, but no throwing up, bad diarrhea, or mucousy stools. We've challenged corn, since it was the last to develop and one of the least severe, and it's going great, so corn is back in.
We aren't giving soy yet, but he has had soybean oil (he'll eat french fries if we're out somewhere, for example) without any adverse reactions. We are being more and more relaxed with his diet, and it's all good **knock on wood!**. If we go to a restaurant, we order him a grilled chicken breast with a side of fruit or steamed veggies or something, and he loves it, and I love not being so freaked out about cross contamination all the time.
We've even tried dairy in small amounts (mozzarella cheese), and he hasn't reacted. Although it must be admitted he wasn't too crazy about the string cheese so I don't know how much he actually ate, lol.
All in all, things are really looking up for us and I'm very excited about it. We're still going slow, introducing things one at a time and giving him a week or two with the new food before trying another one, but it's going great
