My checking account got hacked :(

GAH. I could just cry. Nearly $1,000 in charges and my account is now $250 overdrawn with my credit card payment due to come out Wednesday.

All I get from the bank is "we will investigate and if the charges are found to be fraudulent, we'll reimburse you for any penalties or late fees."

Great. OK. But how am I supposed to pay for day care this week, j-holes?

*SIGH*

  • Seriously, call back and play hardball. Most banks will credit you the amount while they investigate.

Our check book got stolen and they credited us the amount with the stipulation that they could revoke it later. I've heard the same thing from others. Have you filed a police report?

Is there any chance your x will help you out in the meantime or that your daycare could be understanding?

    Sorry :(

Call you cc company and see if you can work something out? maybe you can scan them the evidence from the claim you put in with the bank?

...and cry. lots of tears will work in your favor!

    Sorry :(

I'm going to try calling them back tonight and suggesting this. Thank you.

  • for real? holy crap.   Yeah, definitely call the bank and have them at least set up $1000 overdraft (without fees) on your account

  • Jeez! I'm so sorry. I would definitely call your bank back and have them credit you the money. Anything less from them is unacceptable.

Agreed!  Any reputable banking company will credit you the charges while they investigate.  We just had a card lost/stolen, and our bank was all over it.

For future, you may want to check your overdraft settings.  On all our checking accounts we have it set to decline if the funds are not available.  So, when I lost the card, there was only about $80 in that specific account.  The person spent $78 at Walmart, then had three other transactions (over $200) declined.

  • Dude, that sucks! I am so sorry :( I agree with the others though, definitely call back, they should be willing to work with you.

  • I am sorry sweets.. what a freaking bummer!

I definitely think you need to call the bank and ask them to release the funds while they investigate.

If you need some to get you through, just holla. It isnt a problem at all

  • Our accoutn was hacked into twice. you should have some sort of protection against this and they shoudl credit your account back for every single penny immeditaly until they investigate!!
  • They are refusing to credit my account until the claim has been processed. I bank with Wells Fargo and apparently this is their policy.

Claim processing will take seven to 10 business days. So yeah, Wells Fargo, go f&ck yourself.

In the meantime, I called my parents tonight and my mom insisted on transferring some money into my account to cover the day care, etc. until the claim comes through. I HATE asking anyone, especially my parents, for money but I need some help and will gladly take it.

And now I just cried. And you're right. I do feel better.

  • That's really strange because that's not WF normal policy. I've had my checking account hacked twice and both times I had the money back by the next business day. The most recent time was just last month! They even advertise this as one of their main selling points

  • Ugh!  How frustrating.  Hopefully they will get it all sorted out soon and maybe if you call again tomorrow you'll get someone that will credit your account right away.

This is weird. I bank with WF and they credited me the money when my checkbook was stolen.

I am sorry you are going through this. Glad your mom could help you out!

Jeez, sounds like it's time to switch banks! That's ridiculous. Good thing for moms though, huh? We just had to borrow a little from my mom because DH's paycheck is 2 weeks late...again. Nice, huh? I guess he works his butt off for free.
