Tummy troubles

A isn't gaining weight quick enough to satisfy the doctor and after much deliberation we've decided to switch to formula. Last night was pretty difficult because she was in some pain due to the switch. I've given her mylicon gas drops which seem to help a bit but she was still really fussy until she finally had a bowel movement around noon. Anyone have any ideas to help relieve the pain until her body adjusts?

TIA

Re: Tummy troubles

  • Oh, that stinks. I can only suggest you keep cycling her legs and hold her belly down along the length of your arm to help put pressure on her belly.

Do you want to abandon BF'ing all together? Can you supplement? I know my SIL used a combo of both BF'ing and formula. It would be terrible if you had to give up BF'ing if you didn't want to yet.

I'm pumping a bit and giving her a bottle but I plan to stop once I go back to work. I had a lot of reservations in the beginning but I feel more comfortable with stopping all together now. I've been driving myself crazy the last month and this helps.

  • Can you do a combo of BM and formula in order to wean her on to formula? You probably don't need to switch to all formula. You could nurse her for a few feedings and then do a bottle or two of regular or high-calorie formula a day. That would be easier on her tummy than a straight-up switch (and easier on your boobs, too! :)).

This was my thought too.  DD wasn't bf'd but we did have to switch formulas several times and we had to switch gradually or she would have problems.  We also had constipation issues and ended up having to add prune juice to her bottles so that she could go at all.  If you could still bf some and then just add in some bottles of formula it might be easier on her tummy.

  • My LO has had all sorts of constipation issues until just recently. We had used Karo syrup, apple juice, pear juice, and prune juice. And LOTS of Mylicon.
