Question about steroid shots

Our Son was born at 35 weeks 3 days, they don't know why. He had a fairly short NICU stay and has since been very healthy.

That brings us to now, I'm 24.5 weeks pregnant with baby number 2 and have been taking progesterone injections since 16 weeks. I'm feeling good, no contractions or complications thus far. My OB mentioned something about steroid shots if my uterus became irritable. I'm just looking for clarification on what that does, when they usually give them etc. I obviously never received them last time.

Thanks for reading!

Re: Question about steroid shots

  • Hi there,

The steroid shots promote lung development.  I had them around 24-25 weeks.  The "plan" was to have them every 4 weeks until they had to deliver the twins.  I only was able to get that first set in though because I had the babies at 27 weeks.   Good luck!

This exactly for me except I barely got the 2nd round in before I delivered at 28 weeks.

  • Everything above. I got my first round two days before and one 2 hours before my emergency c-section.

  • Similar here.  I had DS unexpectedly at 34 weeks (unexplained pPROM).  I'm getting weekly progesterone shots this time and will get the steroid shots if I get a + fFN or start having more contractions to help speed up lung development.  My doctor wants to wait as long as possible before giving them, but still get them in if it looks like I'll need them since they're most effective within the first week or two apparently.
  •  I received my steroid shots because I had placenta previa and a possible placenta accreta. They gave my first round at 24 weeks and got another when I bled for the 4th time around 28 weeks. Doctors knew I was going to deliver early when they didn't know. In all I bled for 10 times before delivering DS at 31w5d.

  • I got my first round at 28 weeks when I went into PTL for the first time. Then I got the second round at 31 weeks. They are only effective if you deliver within 2 weeks of them being administered.
