Frustrated with P*!# questions at hospital-Hypnobabies ?

So, How are y'all handling the questions from Residents and OBs pertaining to your pressure waves? All I get is "Are they p--nful?" and "You'll know when to come in because they'll be p--nful." But then the doc looks at me while I'm having contractions on the monitors and says that i'm handling them so well.

Have and hypnobabies mamas gone from early labor to active labor without describing the pressure waves in terms that the OB/MW/nurses would understand?

I don't know if this is clear but TIA!

  • I did Hypnobirthing, but I showed up at the hospital so far along that they weren't getting much answers out of me at all. :) I gave birth about an hour and a half after I arrived. I don't know why you'd need to describe the pressure waves to them at all, though. But you will know when to come in ... not that it will be more painful, but because the intensity of your labor will change. It's not like you're likely to just be ready to push and still think you're in early labor or anything. :)

Told IVF is the only option and have not found a clinic that will take me.

  • I told my MW when I was in early labor, even though I was having pw every 2-3 mintues, 45-60 seconds duration, that they weren't intense enough to be active labor. I also had pit augmentation after my membranes ruptured and GBS+, otherwise I would not have been at the hospital at all.
  • I don't have a problem using the words pain or contraction.  For me, it doesn't change the way I will be coping with it.  Plus, I would probably rather say "I am dealing with the pain effectively" or "I just had an intense contraction" instead of educating people about hypnobabies that way they will leave me alone to do what I have to do.  I guess I just don't get hung up on the wording.

This is more of my fears than anything else.  I am totally fine with the wording of "pain" and "contraction" when speaking to a doctor and nurse.  IWe are doing a fear release at next week's class, and I cannot wait for that one!

  • Translate it in your mind into intensity.  When they are very strong and intense and you want to completely relax and use your fingerdrop through each pressure wave, that will be equivalent to their definition.  Or if you live close to the hospital and want to go in a bit later, maybe wait until you are vocalizing through them as well (ahhing, humming)
  • Yes, I have gone from early labor to active labor without describing *pain*. With my second I was in the hospital with broken waters and GBS+ status. I had had very brief birth preferences which clearly stated "Please do not ask me my pain level. I understand what pain relief options are available and will ask for them if I need them." I highly recommend you do the same. I went all through early, active labor and transition all the while thinking I was only in early labor. No one mentioned pain once. With my first birth I arrived in active labor, but again, no mentions of pain from the staff because they understood and respected my preference.

As for describing your contractions to tell when you should come in, I would go more by their frequency than intensity since most Hypnobabies moms do not feel contractions in the same way as other women do.

  • Last time around I put in my birth plan that I didn't want anyone asking about my pain.  Of all the things on my birth plan, that was the one they said they absolutely could not do.  They are required to ask about pain level every so many hours.  They ask on a scale from 1-10.  I've decided that I'm going to come up with a default number, say a 3 or so, and just give that number every time so that I don't have to internalize the question and think about it.  I will be sure that beyond that 1-10 question, my support knows that I don't want to talk about pain and maybe they can intercept (and if the nurse really needs to know something maybe they can rephrase).  I wasn't doing Hypnobabies last time (am this time), but even then, I really didn't want to dwell on pain.
