Hopefully I am not the only one who has them
.I have actually had some grey hair for a while, I noticed them back in HS (first sign I worry too much). Having dark hair makes it really hard to just let them be. I have been dying them black for a while on my own because I got it done professionally but it was costing too much because my hair grows so fast.
So here is my question is there a dye that you use that last longer than others? It seems like the most I am able to go is about two weeks and that is pain. It starts showing after two weeks, and if I let it go too long it looks crazy.
Re: Let's talk grey hair..
I'm definitely no expert on hair coloring, but have you tried experimenting with permanent vs semi-permanent?
I know for me, when I had darker color in my hair I felt like the gray really showed a lot faster. Now that I have highlights I feel like I can get away with going longer between appointments because the gray sort of blends in with the light colors. I don't know if that's really an option for you though if you have darker hair. Although my mom also started putting highlights in just to help with the gray and she has super dark brown hair.
Im right there with you. Dark hair & grays is a beeyotch. Doesnt blend the same way as if you have lighter hair.
The 3rd kid did me in and now I have some serious gray showing after only a couple weeks of dying as well. My sister suggested just doing a touch up on the roots every few weeks. I havent tried it yet though. Im nervous htat it wont come out right.
I recently use d the john freida foam and it didnt cover all the gray to begin wit and then it even faded. Total bummer because the foam was so easy.
I guess my point is that I have yet to find the perfect solution or maintenance routine either.
The 2nd and third kid did me in too, and around my ears are the worst those seem to stay grey ugh. I looked into a touch up but it is $$ at the salon. Maybe I should look for a cheaper salon.
Have you considered learning how to color your hair the way the pros do it? My mom paid a hairstylist to sit down with her and walk her through it and oversee her doing it. She learned how to mix it, apply, etc.
You can buy the pro colors at beauty supply stores.
She colors her hair once a month now. Granted, she colors ALL her hair since it is white (has been since she was 28).
I have a crap ton of grays, but I am not ready to start dying because my hair will be extremely difficult to color match.

I have the same issue (dark dark brown hair, LOTS of grey). My grey is dye resistant too which means even if the rest of my head take the color, the stubborn grey hairs to not. To get great salon coverage, I have to sit under a dryer with dye in my hair for two hours.
So at home. My stylist (hi Bobby!), said I could do maintance at home with Nice and Easy root touch up for grey hair in a color one shade darker than my natural color. I am too lazy (and hate the mess at home) so I continue to book my appointments for every 6 weeks. I figure if I did it at home, I'd have to do it every three weeks, and it would cost me in time and money about what I spend to get it done every 6 at the salon and if I do it there, someone else does it and cleans up!
My mom also does the beauty supplu haircolor mixing route. May be worth talking to your stylist about.
I have TONS of gray and regularly refer to myself as Bonnie Raitt (I have the total stripe in the front, lol). Because I am naturally curly I am lucky, I can let it go for longer, but I manage to cover it up by getting highlights... the lighter shades at the crown tend to hide the gray easier.
I know your hair is dark, dark though so probably you don't want blond highlights.
Melissa is in Vegas at the hair show but page her or send her a fb message about it at the end of the week and I'm sure she'd give you her opinion.
It's tough because it is SO expensive. I feel ya- being curly I can get away with highlighting like 3 or 4 times a year but no dice with straight hair. Ugh.
Chi Farouk Ionic Hair Color but it is meant for professionals. I bought the mixing manual off of ebay and I buy the product online. It's what my pro use to charge me hundreds in hair services for. At home, it's about $6-10 a DIY treatment. It's also less damaging than the grocery store stuff.
It sounds like you need a color pen for root touch ups. You can just color the stuff that shows around your face without having to dye. Those pens can be found at just about any beauty supply store, don't cost a lot and are a lot like applying mascara to your hair.
Most of the color lines that I've run into had good blones or brunettes but every last one I've read reviews on had complaints that the red didn't stick. Maybe you could pass the gray off as blonde highlights instead? Bleach out small chunks that include the gray so it looks intentional?
Sadly, mine are mixed in. Most people think they are blonde hairs until they get closer and realize it is white hairs. Part of me thinks I am just gonna fade to strawberry blonde and then to white and I just might let it happen. I hate the idea of more body maintenance.
