Get your paws off my baby!! Vent

Maybe I am overprotective, but I still do not want total strangers touching my kid. My big concern is germs, but why does everyone think they have the right to touch your kid?

Stranger: Can I touch your baby?

Me: Sorry but no.

Stranger: I will just touch her on the head.

Um, I don't know how to tell you in a clearer way than what I just said. I get this everywhere we go(as I'm sure everyone else with a new baby does.) Today I was pushing the cart away from an old lady who wanted to touch her and she just kept following me until she finally caught up enough to touch her. Also I have had numerous people who, after I said no, told me that they HAD to touch her, if not she would get the evil eye. I know that where I live there are a lot of people who believe in that stuff, but it is like they are throwing it out there as a threat. I also ran into a lady who wanted to hold her at the supermarket today. Maybe I am the crazy one, but I just don't get people sometimes.

Ok, vent over.

Anniversary

I personally wasn't okay with people touching her before she had her 2 month shots.  I would just say, "I'm sorry, she hasn't had her shots yet, and her doctor has told us that it's best for people not to touch her so she doesn't get sick."  Then, walk away.  With the lady stalking you in the store, I probably would have left, or gone into the bathroom or something.

  • It must be a regional thing, because I have Never had anyone try to touch him. Only people I know, and even then they ask first.

I think I would have flipped my lid if some lady followed me around the store trying to touch him. I've had lots of people comment on how cute he is and all the normal stuff when out, but no touching.

  • I'm very firm about people touching her. Especially since she's a preemie. I got a little sign that tells people to back off no touching without clean hands from Etsy. It goes right on her carrier. I think I would have gone crazy on the lady following me around the store!!

  • Yeah, the lady stalking you in the store would've got an earful if that was me.  She would've been so embarrassed by the scene that I made, that SHE would've been the one to leave the store or go to the bathroom.  How rude!

That's because you live in Canada and everyone is super nice and polite there.

  • I've never had anyone ask to touch him or try to touch him-other than people we know. I've had a few people look at him at the store but that's all. I don't know what I would do if someone kept trying to touch him though-I'd probably tell them to f**k off and then get out of there.
  • I always hear about these armies of old ladies skulking around look for babies to touch but I never had this issue with either of my kids.  Occasionally someone will pat a head but it doesn't faze me.

This!  There have been very few times when someone I don't know has asked to touch DD or has patted her on the head, and it's always been someone who knows my parents or the ILs and is excited to meet their granddaughter.

We Canadians don't touch other people's babies because if they get sick we all pay for it with our health care system- too many sick babies= increased taxes for allStick out tongue

In all seriousness, no one has ever tried/asked to touch my baby. I live in a small Canadian city and I can't go to the grocery store without strangers telling me how cute he is/asking how old he is- but never try to touch.

The evil eye thing is totally regional. Its a big part of Mexican folk culture-we've had that too (even during pregnancy).

Since C is a preemie I am just really clear about why they can't touch her and that usually works pretty well. No one has stalked us yet though--that's really creepy.

  • I always have people touch her feet (she never has shoes or socks on).  Most people don't ask but they just touch her toes.  It doesn't bother me right now cause it isn't her face and she doesn't put her feet near her face so I just wipe her feet off.  Once she is older we will have to address it but right now I just keep the wipes handy.  But I can see the how the little old lady chasing you around the store could get annoying. And I would definately not be down with a random stranger wanting to hold DD.

It's true, part is being polite, part is that we just don't want to pay more taxes haha.

I must say though, that I do enjoy all the cute comments, especially since I don't usually take his sunglasses off in stores (it's just as bright in the store as it is outside) and lots of people comment on his sunglasses too.
