Abnormal Pap OB wants to do colposcopy

This is the 3rd time in my life I've had an abnormal pap, the last 2 times the results of the colposcopy have come back normal. I had a yeast infection when the pap was done so I don't know if that could have made a difference in the results. I'm thinking I'm going to tell them no on the colposcopy and wait until after I have the baby to do it. I just don't want them messing with my cervix right now.

Has anyone had this or a similar situation?

Oh, and my OB is on maternity leave right now so I can't even ask her, so it's a Dr I'm not familiar with.

Re: Abnormal Pap OB wants to do colposcopy

  • I have had a colpo before I was pregnant and thankfully the results came back normal.  If I were you I would wait till after January to have yours done.  It is only 5 months away, especially since your regular dr. is not available.  I would not want anyone messing with anything down there while being pregnant.

By the way, Congrats on fiding out your having a littly boy!! How exciting!

  • I had an abnormal pap a few weeks ago and am having a colposcopy next tues.  They are just looking, will not be doig a biopsy since I am pregnant. They just want to get a closer look.  Maybe you can ask your doctor is that is an option???

Either way, LO can't be harmed by a colposcopy because that is just a magnified view of your cervix and cells. However, most OB/GYNs and NPs will not take a biopsy and that is standard. I say have it done, baby can't be harmed and you will know what you are up against.

On a positive note, most cases of abnormal cells will go away with pregnancy.

  • No, the OP is still there strange that you can't see it!

I didn't realize they could just look without doing a biopsy, both times I've had it done before they have done the biopsy so I assumed that it was part of it.

  • This is my 2nd abnormal pap. I had one about four years come up abnormal and they did biopsy and colposcopy and everything was normal. Every pap I've had after that has been normal until I got pregnant. The doctor told me that many changes take place during pregnancy and that it is not uncommon to have abnormal pap smears. They are not doing anything at this point. The doctor said I would have another pap at my postpartum checkup, which will be 6 weeks after the baby is born. If that one is abnormal too, then she will do a colposcopy and go from there. She also said that during labor many cervical cells are actually shed so it is likely that everything will be back to normal. Oh, and I also had a yeast infection at the same time as my pap smear so who knows about that one.

Sorry for this stress...not fun!  I don't have any experience with it, so the purpose for my post is to ask when you found out team blue???  I was not on at all this weekend, so I must have missed something.  So exciting that our Jan Mom's club is starting to find out.  I still have to wait 2 weeks...boo!

After reading about all the elective u/s here I did some googling Friday afternoon and found a 3D u/s place very close to me that did the 2D gender determination u/s also so I called and they said no appt necessary so DH and I went that same evening! The tech checked several angles and had me turn so that she could be sure, but I saw it too, it was definitely a boy!

  • I had a colposcopy last fall and there were low-grade abnormal cells. before the procedure they actually did a pregnancy test to make sure I WASN'T pregnant. When we got the abnormal results of the colpo, my dr. had me wait 6 months and then I had a repeat pap which came back normal. A

t that appt, I told my OB that I was planning to TTC depending on the results of the pap. He told me not to wait to TTC if we were ready because even if the pap was abnormal we'd wait another 6 months, or to the end of the pregnancy and try again. He said most of the time, these things resolve them selves and we'd just keep tabs on it.

Basically, his take was to wait it out. He seemed confident that the cells are so slow growing that waiting for nine months wouldn't make a difference one way or the other. In my case, waiting six months didn't make it worse, it made the abnormal cells go away.

From that experience, I'd say wait on the colposcopy until you're done with your pregnancy and then just ask for a repeat pap.

me too! if that's an option, then maybe that's the way to go!
